The program is designed to help develop security police combat, marksmanship, tactical, and professional skills and gives the individuals and units a way to show their ; excellence in these skills. The competition also gives security agencies the opportunity to refine their security police combat tactics and methods by looking at other approaches to security, law enforcement, and base defense problems and tactics. Following the competition, which is scheduled to run Sunday through Sept. 1, a team to represent AFLC in the Air Force Peacekeeper Challenge at Kirtland AFB, N.M., Oct. 3 will be selected. Ten events are scheduled for the competition and include the .38 revolver event, military working dog events M203 grenade launcher event, M60 machine gun event, combat rifle course event, defender challenge event, physical fitness event; accident investigation event, crime scene search and apprehension and information security. Special categories of competition include the Colonel's Hat Competition and the Chief of Security Police Run. During the .38 revolver event, competitors must run more than 200 yards, fire and reload their weapons from prone and barricaded positions. The competitors complete the event by shooting at a series of friend and foe targets which are exposed to d intervals. the shooter in The military working dog event challenges the handler and dog as a team. The handler directs and controls the dog through obstacles and during obedience tasks, attack scenarios, open field scouting and building searches. While competing in the grenade launcher event, the grenadier must negotiate a tactical course approximately 1,800 meters long. Fixed and pop-u- p targets are along the route which the grenadier must acquire, identify, and engage. Target ranges vary from 50 to 240 meters. The team fires 240 rounds of balltracer ammunition from four different locations. The team must run to the locations while carrying the weapon and ammunition. The command team members, in the combat rifle course event, fire their rifles from prone and foxhole positions. Pop-u-p targets between 50 and 300 yards are exposed either singularly or in multiples for 5 seconds. Each member must shoot at each target which is camouflaged as part of the natural terrain. The team then moves through a ravine where additional targets are exposed. They must acquireidentify, and engage these new targets. The course covers approximately one quarter mile and the target range varies between 0 meters. The defender challenge event combines" three events which include land navigation, combat patroling, and tactics. The course is almost 4,000 meters and physically demanding. Base survivability, weapons and tactics skills are tested. In the physical fitness event, team members must run a IV2 mile course which has 21 obstacles, some as high as 40 feet. During the accident investigation event, each contestant must investigate a vehicle accident. They are judged on investigative skills, accident scene management, report writing and enforcement of traffic laws. In the crime scene search and apprehension event, a team member conducts a criminal investigation and is graded on investigative skills, collection and maintenance of evidence, enforcement of criminal laws, preparation and presentation of written and oral reports and the legality and effectiveness of apprehending a suspect. The Colonel's Hat Competition, a just for fun event, requires the command's chief of security chiefs of security police and other police, base-levsenior security police members to defend a simulated resource against the team captains.
