Show HILL TOP TIMES Friday, August 19, 19 S3 8tflh) WW pradfiiees; NAT deployment essential flightline personnel were required to do their normal jobs dressed in full chemical warfare ensembles mask, hood, rubber gloves and booties By TSgt. Denise Cornelia 388th TFW Public Affairs Division Last week, two squadrons of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing simulated deployment to a NATO country for a locally generated and exercise. I"'"' i& & i . j , I I x" s 3' ) fvv Exercise Rainbow 83-- 8 was conducted by wing inspectors under the same inspection criteria that the Tactical Air Command Inspector General team uses during Operational Readiness Inspections. The exercise started slowly with message traffic indicating a simulated buildup of hostile force activities. Foregoing the normal routine of recalling all wing personnel for mobility processing and generation of aircraft, wing inspectors started the exercise Aug. 8, as if the squadrons were already in the NATO country. Exercise events included seven simulated airfield attacks, in which '11 ; i explosive ordnance personnel detonated smoke bombs. During the - . attacks, all exercise personnel were required to don their gas masks and full chemical warfare ensembles. Adding to the realism, flightline workers had to run to simulated bunker shelters marked with sandbags. They remained in the bunkers until the attack was over. Wing inspectors also' conducted a chemical environment exercise Thursday morning in which ' ' A pilot dressed in chemical warfare gear completes his HOOPER HAVEN Must see this beautiful 5 bedroom 1 acre of land, 8 fruit trees. On the munitions side of the wing, MSgt. Robert Smith, NCOIC of muni- tions production, said that his people started building bombs for the exercise Aug. 9. "After we got the munitions order, it took us about two hours to actually start loading ammo," he said. "We had to break out all the ordnance we would be building, open up buildings and get the vehicles ready for transporting the loads." Adding to the difficulty of their job were simulated airfield attacks. Sergeant Smith said, "When we were in alarm Red or Black, we had to put on our chemical warfare suits and continue building bombs." He added that 14 automatic loading systems were loaded with 20mm shells while the specialists wore the suits. The ALC is used to feed ammo into 6 gatling guns.
