Show Wednesday, November 24, 1982 By Ron Blair Fire Inspector The winter winds are blowing, snowflakes are falling and furnaces at' Hill AFB and in everyone's homes are going full blast. For a fire-saf- e winter, the base Fire Department offers the following recommendations to keep not only base furnaces, but home furnaces working safely and properly. . The most important thing any individual can do about having a fire-saf- e operating gas furnace is to have it checked by a qualified contractor once a year. He can look at a furnace, see if anything is .worn or broken and then tell you what you can do for your family's safety. On Hill AFB, Adam II noted more than 300 defec- tive furnaces in the military family housing this year. . In connection with this, don't put clothing or other cloth materials on or by the furnace to dry. Keep filters clean Furnace filters must always be used to prevent dirt damage. As a result, they must be kept clean and must be used. When filters become dirty, insufficient air is delivered through the blower. This will increase heating costs and hamper the amount of heat dispensed by the furnace. Common signs of dirty filters are inability to heat, hotter air temperatures from registers and cyling of the burner from the safety device functions which causes the unit to shut down due to insufficient air. Check filters monthly, especially if the furnace is used for both heating and cooling. There are two types of filters: high velocity, washable ones which can be cleaned and reused, or disposable ones which can be thrown away when they are dirty and new ones installed. When cleaning the high velocity washable filters, wash with a stream of water directly from a faucet or hose, then allow them to dry before replacing " them. Disposable filters should be replaced entirely, not cleaned. Cleaning destroys this type of filter's ability to attract and hold dust. Always replace with the same size and type. Before removing the filters, shut off all power to the unit. Remove the front access panel, then remove and replace filter and the panel. Be sure blower access panels are in place before renewing operation to prevent drawing gas fumes into the home. Check the furnace burner area and other areas inside for dust and lint. Always keep the inside of the furnace free of these materials. Portable electric heaters Plug portable electric heaters directly into a wall outlet. Don't use extension cords. Place heater away from draperies, loose hanging towels or other combustible materials.
