Markin syppoirfls emmeirgeinicy reqyireinrsieirsis through the U.S. Air Force chain of command, it is in no way comprised of just military personnel. It is, in fact, made up largely of civilian volunteers. To join MARS, the applicant must be 14 years old or older, a United States citizen or resident alien, and hold an amateur radio Communications Squadron The Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS) within the U.S. Air Force is primarily geared to support the emergency communications requirements of the Air For Force. The communications support consists of a worldwide network of radio systems operated by active military unit stations, stationed in our reserve component units, and affiliate civilian members who voluntarily choose to belong to the program. MARS offers the amateur radio operator, who can participate, a wide range of experience. The bulk of the MARS operation 0 is on single sideband high frequency 1881st license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. In addition to these prerequisites, U.S. Air Force MARS has certain eligibility and participation requirements which are described in MARS literature. The U.S. Air Force MARS has been established for more than 30 years and has been active and successful in providing the Air Force with tremendously varied and responsive communications support. Each Air Force MARS member must maintain a minimum of six hours' participation per quarter in their primary assignment. Secondary assignments are also available to provide members the opportunity to function in many specialized areas of MARS. The secondary assignment areas are: t MARS Technical Service (MTS). This interest area is designed to attract the technically oriented MARS member. Frequency Monitoring (FYMON). A small but effective group of highly specialized (2-3- MHz) radio nets. However, there are more than 100 VHF repeaters operating on a standard frequency pair operating in most major cities in the continental United States that also serve the Air Force. The MARS is an official function of the United States government and the Department of Defense. As such it has official status, specific responsibilities and unique privileges including the use of assigned government radio frequencies. While MARS is directed and managed for the affiliate to "do their thing" in Air Force MARS. U.S. Air Force MARS is a complex structure of military personnel and affiliate members who work together in harmony to provide the Air Force with a highly effective single thread high frequency emergency communications capability in support of several Air Force and major air command operation plans. This combination of military and affiliate stations provides this capability on a ready and cost effective basis. Within this and specially equipped members are assigned on a secondary basis as frequency monitors. Overseas Phone Patch. Another secondary MARS function to which members can be assigned is overseas phone patching. Obviously "phone patchers" must have exceptional "long haul" radio and antenna capabilities and considerable time available to support an effort of this nature. Transcontinental Radioteletype Net. The TCON RATT net operates seven days a week and consists of mostly affiliate members. Interfaced with Air Force voice, nets exist through the Air Force East Coast Gateway station, "AIR." CW e Transcontinental Net. The Transcontinental TCON CW net is exclusively an affiliate net, managed by an .affiliate. The programs provide ample opportunity capability, the volunteer affiliate members play a dominant role. Put your unique talent and skill to work for your nation. Be an amateur and affiliate with the military at the same time join U.S. Air Force MARS. For further information contact SSgt. Tom Hauskins at Ext. 7949, . ' building 888. J&J's...
