Force expects to save nearly $97 million in support costs for the Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile, with the installation of a modern guidance system by Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill AFB. Col. Orville "Nip" Litzsinger, director of the Air Force ICBM program, said the project has already paid for itself, due to the number of things working better than planned. The project, named Rivet Hawk, replaced mechanical guidance system the with solid-stat- e electronics, comparable to that used on the Apollo missile system and many airliners. It also included a revision of a million pages of technical data and modification of missile procedures. The project was planned after a 1974 study showed a potential shortage of parts to inrain5iiirsT)w tremendous influence in all critical resource areas of logistics including funds, materiel availability and manpower, which are the foundation of readiness. maintain the old guidance system. The guidance system update is the largest ICBM modification ever done by the Air Force Logistics Command. Colonel Litzsinger said it would normally take three to four years to develop and test a system as technically complex as this change required. "Yet, we were able to test flight the hardware within nine months of Air Force approval," he said. A team of 18 specialists from Ogden was assisted by people from tile Strategic Air Command to install the replacement system. In addition to the replacement in 54 missiles, the team also had to change all the motor-drive- n switches in the electronic system and redesign 22 other electronic modules. The missiles are located at Little Rock n AFB, Ark., AFB, Ariz., and McConnell AFB, Kan. The team finished their in-dep- th Page resources. Colonel Litzsinger said the ability of the team workers to work under high pressure and stick precisely to "textbook procedures" without losing any time, speaks highly of their efficiency. The new guidance system is projected to operate more than 2,000 hours before it needs to be repaired, compared to approximately 900 hours for the old system.
