Show Page June 29, 1980 HILL TOP TIMES 2 B is - is living memory d Last Friday, two visitors saw the base which was named for their brother and first-han- uncle. Mrs. Melvina Hitchcock and grandson Joe. Sutherland were treated to a tour of the base, named after Mrs. Hitchcock's brother, Maj. Ployer P. Hill. The two visited the Ployer P. Hill monument, toured the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, the F--4 production maintenance line, the Hill Engineering Test Facility and heard the Ogden Air Logistics Center mission briefing. "I was very close to my brother," Mrs. Hitchcock said, "and the only consolation I m am his death is that he was doing something he loved. "I think Hill AFB will always be a have of memorial to that love," she reflected. Major Hill was killed on Oct. 30, 1935 at Wright-Patterso- n AFB, Ohio, while testing XB17 the designed and built by the Boeing Aircraft Company in a bid to get a War e heavy Department contract for a long-rang- bomber. The major was chief test pilot for the Army Air Corps at the time. The plane later became the B17 Flying Fortress, the country's only combat plane of merit "as it entered World War II.
