(AFNS) long-rang- - Five North American RICHARDS-GEBAU- aircraft detection and tracking capabilities are now in operation, according to the Electronics Systems Division of the Air Force Systems Command. huge radar, used in the Aerospace Defense Command's electronic network for directing the defense of the North American continent, is now getting a better look at both friendly and potentially threatening aircraft. Air Force stations at North Charleston, S.C.; Roanoke Rapids, N.C. ; Gibbsboro, N.J.; Havre, Mont.; andHebo, Ore., are among the first of 12 United States and 10 Canadian radars being modernized. "The improvement program has two principal goals," explained system program director Col. Harold J. McLoud, Jr. He said the program offers better target detection under adverse weather conditions, and more precise location of targets. "We also get 'fringe benefits' from accomplishing these two goals. By replacing the old vacuum tube electronics with modern solid state circuitry, we achieve increased reliability and reduced time." Main changes in the radar, originally installed in the early 1960's as part of the SAGE Ground Environment) air defense system, include the addition of two side-lob- e blanking antennas to the 38 by 24 foot main antenna and a entirely new radar receiver. Modification of the radars at the remaining 17 sites on the continent's east and west coasts and northern approaches will continue into early 1974. The installation follows an extensive development and test program involving numerous flights of Aerospace Defense Command aircraft against the improved radar, aerial drops by ADC of chaff (material designed to confuse radar operators by giving false returns), and airborne measurements of the aircraft. radar by a specially - instrumented EC-13- 5 A PROTESTANT WOMEN OF THE CHAPEL NEWS: This month's General Meeting will be Thursday, 26 July, at 0915 in the Chapel One basement. The system will minimize voice communications between pilot and controller now used to gather this information. The new method gives controllers more time to do their jobs, according to AFCS officials here. Also, PIDP will indicate the transfer of aircraft between controllers within a radar approach control (RAPCON) facility by radar indicator signals rather than by voice communication. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John D. Ryan has informed commanders worldwide of changes to male grooming stan- dards. The Airman Education and Commissioning Program (AECP), Bootstrap Commissioning Program (BCP) and Airman Commissioning Program (ACP) have been consolidated into a single program known as the AECP. Air Force is working with the other military services on the Defense Officer Personnel Management System which includes an all regular force after 11 years of service and a single officer promotion system. Eleven Air Force Reserve units are participating in a program to determine if shorter enlistments in the Reserve will aid the recruitment of nonprior service people.
