Louis Raybold MARTY stared at the man on other side of the mes-qult- e fire. "Reckon we'll make It?" "Sure." said Chuck. Two stupid guys," said Marty. "Losing ourselves In the middle of nowhere all because, we took your short cut." "Found the canary-yello- didn't we? Genuine podt of carnotlte that set the Geiger clicking like s runaway clock!" "What good is a fortune to two corpses? Besides, 't Isn't likely we could locate the spot again In all that mess of rocks." "Made a map, didn't I?" "So you made a map." Marty edged nearer the Ore. Hard lo be-lieve that with sunrise a blazing Inferno would be let loose on the desert floor. "I have a plan," said Chuck, Here it comes, thought Marty. "Any moment now we'll be able to spot Red Butte. "And your plan?" "There'll be shade at the base of the butte. Not much, especially at noon, but enough. One of us must wait there while the other takes the water and strikes out for the pueblo to bring back a couple ponies." "How do we decide which one goes?" "It has to be the one certain to make it." You'll see to It that I stay, thought Marty. Chuck Jumped to his feet. back until after I kicked the bucket." "Can still do that. I mean the map would be here." "Not If I buried It so only I could find It." "Taking no chances, are you? Thought of everything, haven't you?" Chuck fished a pad from his Jeans pocket, ripped off the top sheet covered with lines and ar-rows and spotted with a large X, handed it to Marty "So long," he said. Marty stared after him until it was Impossible to tell whether the black speck on the horizon was Chuck's plodding figure or a dust devil. Then he buried the map. Ten paces to the West from the north end of the butte at the roots of a buckhom cactus. He slept little that night, made wakeful by thirst, hunger. At daybreak he started digging. But where was the map? The wind had remade the landscape with new drifts of sand. Nor could he be sure which of all the evenly-sp-aced buckhom cacti was the one ten paces from the north end of the butte. He dug fantically with his fingers, but to no purpose. The day dragged on. The sun set in a crimson glory, desert-fashio- Weak now from hunger, thirst, and worry over the map, Marty dropped asleep. He was roused by cool water on his Hps, and woke to find Chuck kneeling beside him with a drip-- ed to the east where a rising sun was setting aflame the sandstone cap of a distant butte. "Let's go." Presently, "You're the one to go on," said Marty. "I'm done In." "Think you can hold out until get back?" "Do my best." Marty hesitated moment. Then, "Before you go, give me the map," he said. Chuck's eyebrows lifted. "Afraid I'll walk out on you?" "You could, you know. Not come ping canteen. "I buried it and now I can't find it." "So what?" Chuck shrugged his shoulders. "I didn't come back for the map. Didn't have to. If you'd ever been a salesman, you'd know his order pad always carries carbons. When I made that map, I made it in triplicate." "So although you gave me a copy, you still had two left!" "That's right. I just wasn't tak-ing any chances I" PRINCESS THEATRE BINGHAM CANYON FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY 25 26 27 TWO TEEN TRIUMPHS 0 .
