Southern Baptist Convention Held by Rev. Robert W. Fields Southern Baptists from all fifty states will be meeting in Denver, Colorado May 30 through June 6 for their annual convention. This year marks their 125th year as a denomination. Before 1845, they were united with what today is called the American Baptist Convention, Con-vention, The split came over the issue of slavery. Numerous efforts have been made to reunite the two groups but all such efforts seem doomed at present. Baptists first came to America in 1681 to escape persecution and have been strong proponents of separation of church and state and of autonomy for each local church. They have no church heirarchy and will send no delegates to the convention con-vention in Denver. (Delegates have power to act on legislation binding on the local church.) Instead they send messengers who simply act as individuals in voting to direct the future course of the denomination. denomin-ation. Each local church is free to follow or not follow the decisions of the denomination. They are generally considered as conservative conserva-tive and missionary in their thinking. think-ing. They accept only the Bible as the Word of God. Proud parents for the first time are Richard and Linda Hansing Dekker with the birth of a 71b. 10 oz. baby girl May 28, 1970 at Hunter, Utah.
