At Detroit Mrs. Little bought a used car, and she and Donna and the boys drove home, fortunately ahead of the blizzards that have since caused havoc in the midwest. Costs That Pay It actually pays farmers to spend money for some items, Marven J. Ogden, Ass't. County Agricultural Agent, points out. Leon Michaelsen, farm management manage-ment specialist at Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural College, says such items include fertilizer, good seed, good livestock, disease control,- arid repair re-pair prevention. He says that where a farm responds to phosphate phosph-ate and nitrate, money spent for high quality, single element fertilizer ferti-lizer is usually among the best spent. This is because such fertilizer ferti-lizer increases production tremendously. tremend-ously. Money spent for good weed-free weed-free seed of adapted varieties will pay a good return. The best varieties variet-ies always bring higher quality and greater production. Careful selection so weeds are never planted plant-ed back on the farm, coupled with a rotation and control program to Tot rid of them, should eventually eliminate this drain on farmers' inances, Prof. Michaelsen says. Farmers who se'l their crops through livestock can well afford to spend money to buy better livestock. live-stock. The average animal will bring about as much in return as her annual feed and grazing cost. The good animal pays returns for the operator's labor. Money for grease, oil, parts, etc., thnt prevent expensive break downs, though low in cost, is usually us-ually well spent. A few cents invested in disease control will usually pay back in dollars in terms of livestock saved.
