In a 40-14 victory, victo-ry, the Orem Tigers proved that they are the class of the region. Their win secured at least a share of the region championship. While Orem was celebrating cele-brating their championship, the Vikings were left to reflect on what turned out to be a winless season. A hard fact to swallow was that there were games that could have been won, but for the most part, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove was falling behind early and struggling to play catch-up much of the season. The Vikings' opponents have scored on big plays much of the season. Such was the case for Orem as well, especially during a two-minute period in the first quarter when the scoreboard went from 0-0 to 14-0 without many people having time to blink. The Tigers opened the scoring with a 46-yard touchdown run just five minutes into the game. Orem then took advantage advan-tage of a blocked punt that was picked up and returned for their second score of the game. With the exception of a long pass from Justin Her-rera Her-rera to Jake Hoyt, the Viking offense could not manage more than a token drive in the first half, and that one ended just inside Orem territory when a fourth-down attempt failed shortly after the beginning of the second quarter. The Tigers took advantage advan-tage of the short field to score their third touchdown of the half. Were it not for Jake Hoyt, who blocked the extra point, Orem would have held a full three-touchdown three-touchdown advantage at the half. Despite the large hole that the Vikings faced entering the locker room, things could have been worse. Orem added another touchdown in the third quarter to increase their lead to 26-0 with only a few seconds remaining in the period. The Tigers added insult to injury in the fourth quarter quar-ter with two quick touchdowns touch-downs that took only three minutes off the game clock. Orem's final score came following fol-lowing a Viking fumble. Teddy Owens picked up the Pleasant Grove offense and guaranteed that the team would not finish the season with a shutout loss. Owens ran 25 yards to the Tiger 48-yard line to' get the first Viking scoring drive started on the right foot. Russ Patten then hauled in a 30-yard pass from Her-rera Her-rera to set up a Pleasant Grove score. Owens capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining in the game. Joey Webb's extra point made the score 40-7. Owens gave the Vikings one final chance at points when he fell on an Orem fumble with four minutes remaining in the game. Herrera capped the night's tally by hitting Patten Pat-ten for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Again Webb added the extra point to finish off the scoring. Though disappointed with a winless record, coach Dale Sampson credited his team for battling through the tough season and remaining upbeat about the team and the year's challenges. chal-lenges. The building blocks are in place for a successful season sea-son next year, with a solid core of juniors and sophomores sopho-mores who gained varsity experience this season. JV cages Tigers Pleasant Grove saved its best overall peformance of the year for the last game as the Vikings beat undefeated unde-feated Orem 21-14. Quarterback Quar-terback Kyler Frampton was on the mark all afternoon. after-noon. He connected on 14-of-16 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings took a 6-0 lead in the first half on a 3-yard run from Ben Packer. Sean Broderick added the extra point. Orem answered back with 60-yard run to tie the game and took the lead on a touchdown pass to Gavin Jones. However, the Vikings answered with a touchdown strike from Frampton to Chad Nichols from 40 yards out. Pleasant Grove then took the lead on a 1-yard run from Mitch Sanderson. Orem put together one final drive and had moved the ball to midfield with two minutes left in the game, but Pleasant Grove corner-back corner-back Aaron Warner picked up his team-leading seventh sev-enth interception of the season sea-son on a pass from Orem's Jason Golightly and returned it to the Tiger 10 to seal the win.
