It drives the way we think, the way we act and the way we believe. To many, this story is so special it is wrong to consider con-sider it in a commercial venture. ven-ture. To others it is this story's beautiful uniqueness that demands that as many people as possible see it. Mel Gibson, the director and financier of The Passion of the Christ is one of the latter, unfortunately unfortunate-ly the movie is so passionate, it will leave most audiences, in this valley at least, trembling, trem-bling, not with awe and inspiration, inspi-ration, but with exhaustion and numbness. The Passion of the Christ is a carefully constructed narrative nar-rative that documents the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus. The sets are breathtak-ingly breathtak-ingly remarkable, the costumes cos-tumes are exquisite in their complexity, and all the lines are spoken in either Hebrew, Aramaic, or Latin. No cost, nor detail, was spared when it came to the telling of this tale, especially when it comes to the violence enacted upon Christ. The last 12 hours of Christ's life were violent hours. They were filled with beatings and torture that are impossible to describe on film. Gibson delves deeply into the reality of what it must have been like for Christ in those last hours and the sets run deep with blood in order to illustrate. Little is spared, including the audience, in this graphic depiction of torture, humiliation humilia-tion and, in the end, crucifixion. crucifix-ion. As to the charge of anti-Semitism: anti-Semitism: I saw nothing to encourage such opinions or behavior. The movie is fair in its depiction of corrupt leaders lead-ers who wanted this trouble-making trouble-making Jesus removed from their politically-charged world. The film clearly depicts many of the Jewish leaders and common people protesting what is being done, leaving in disgust and even defending Jesus. Many, of course, demanded Jesus's death, however many more in the film beg for the proceedings proceed-ings to stop. If anyone is depicted as horrific blood-mongers blood-mongers it is the Roman soldiers sol-diers who are seen as heartless, heart-less, cruel and bloodthirsty. The Passion of the Christ is a brilliant movie, with one of the most important stories to tell. However it is its stringent strin-gent portrayal that will ultimately ulti-mately lead to a lack of success suc-cess it could have had with a lesser rating. This movie deserves its "R" rating. However How-ever it is one of the most moving mov-ing and beautiful movies I have seen in a long time. It is well worth your time and money to go see as long as you can stomach the reality of some of the scenes. - N FREE 125th Anniversary Cell Phone Case! with purchase of select Justin Boots (while supplies last) 36 S. 200 W.
