By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent Pleasant Grove dropped the opening round game of the state basketball tournament tourna-ment 67-77 to the Bonneville Bon-neville Lakers on March 2. After playing two consecutive consec-utive play-in games against Timpanogos and Orem the previous week to make it to the tournament, the Vikings couldn't overcome a poor shooting second quarter quar-ter that saw the Bonneville lead balloon from two points to 21 points. Things got off to a good start for the Vikings as they jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but it turned out to be their only lead of the game. After one quarter of play, the Vikings trailed Bonneville Bon-neville 14-12. Chad Evans continued his impressive play by leading the Vikings with five points in the quarter. quar-ter. In the second quarter the Vikings were getting every opportunity to keep pace with the Lakers. Pleasant Grove was doing a good job of getting the ball deep in the paint, but the shots were just not falling. While the Vikings were suffering through a six-point six-point period, Bonneville was building a comfortable 39-18 lead. Every time the Vikings would turn on the defensive pressure, Bonneville Bon-neville would respond with a three-point bucket. Evan's three points was all the Vikings could manage for a leading scorer that quarter. Pleasant Grove showed great determination in the second half. Even knowing that the score might be out of hand, the Vikings did not give up. Led by Evan's six third-period points, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove made a small dent in the Bonneville lead. After three quarters of play, the Vikings trailed 35-52. To Bonneville's credit, they had an answer for every Viking run. Pleasant Grove played possibly their best period of the season in the fourth with their playoff lives on the line. With the Lakers trying to run out the clock, the Vikings chipped away at the lead, at one point getting their deficit to 1 "1 V J K 0. i! Landon Hallman was very impressive in the fourth quarter as he spearheaded spear-headed the comeback with 17 of his 20 points in the final eight minutes. Evans was the only other Viking in double figures with 17 points, and added 13 boards for a double-double. Alex lorg was also key in the Viking comeback as he was involved in several hustle hus-tle plays that turned into Pleasant Grove points. He also had 4 assists, and Nate Clement contributed with 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Brady Atkinson had 4 boards in very limited minutes. min-utes. In the end, the clock ran out on the Vikings as they finished the season as all but one team does. . .on the losing end. For a group of graduating seniors, they showed their competitive spirit by battling back from an 0-4 region start to reach the tournament when everyone had left them for dead. This group of seniors will be extremely hard to replace. Coach Randy McAllister's McAl-lister's "youth movement," as he calls it, will begin almost immediately as new players will begin to build the nucleus for next season's sea-son's team. For a brief moment, think back fondly of the smooth jump shot of Landon Lan-don Hallman, and Chad Evans' hands of steel that could get nearly every rebound. Then there's Nate Clement, who became one of the great success stories over the past two seasons as he went from obscurity to a solid force inside. Add to that the many role players who knew their responsibilities and performed per-formed without much of the limelight: Alex lorg, the team's best defender, Chris Hall's boost off the bench, Casey Bilbro's steady guide from the point guard spot, and Jay Helquist's quick moves and driving buckets. There were more: Trent Jeppson's timely three-point three-point buckets, Jason Bond and his ability to enter the game and make a difference immediately with a rebound or quick jump shot. Also, not to be forgotten were the dedicated seniors, Jesse Wilde and Brooks Shotgunn, who daily aided the team in practice despite not seeing a great deal of time on the playing floor. Thanks Vikings, for one great ride.
