The profession of teaching is one of honor teachers are the allies of democracy, for only knowledge knowl-edge can make men free. They are the enemies of human Ixindage, for slavery is the pnxluct of ignorance. It is the teacher, this engineer of human character, who stands as the bridge to personal prosperity and individual achievement. While it is true that every' teacher does not meet the conditions of this lolly ideal, I U-lieve that most do. I see evidence of this on a daily basis: in our test scores, from the constant input I receive from parents and students, and from the achievement and success of our students as they enter life. I sincerely appreciate what teachers do. and I know that in spite of the educational innovations which may occur in the twenty-first century, there will never come a time when we do not need sensitive, well trained and dedicated teachers. sausage on it since and the grilled cheese sandwiches come out just fine. No grease! I am still not through because that was not the end. I recently decided to make a big pot of baby limas with a nice ham bixk I had. My crock pot has been ideal for this for many years. It is a West Bend crock pot w hich is a nice brown pot with an enamel interior w hich sits on top of a separate sep-arate hot plate type thing. I have loved this pot. When I got it out to put the Ivans in it. I noticed that the top of the hot plate part was loose. I wondered if it was safe to use but since it was going to be on low all day. I divided to go ahead and cook with it. All went well and the Ixwns were delicious but it left me with nagging doubts. A few-months few-months ago I read an article about a fire in a kitchen in a nearby city and the fire was started by an electric pan of some sort left cooking cook-ing while the family was gone away from home. The fire fighter quoted in the article said that you should never leave any type of a pot to cook while vou are cone. For years I have left a pot roast ui the electric fry pan turned down to sinur.er w hile I went to church. Olympics this and Olympics that. I was getting so sick of hearing about it I almost started tuning it out or changing the channel whenever when-ever the Olympics were mentioned. Then we had the Olympic countdown count-down on the front page of every paper. "Four hundred and eighty days until the Olympics." Then the next day. "Four hundred and seventy-nine days until the Olympics." That got old in a hurry. But now, all of a sudden, it's only four days until the Olympics. Everything Every-thing is finally ready and I can't read enough or hear enough about it. I think the banners on the buildings build-ings in Salt Lake City look beautiful. beauti-ful. When national commercials Welcome the world, the world welcomes lisp Although I'm not normally an early riser, Wednesday I'll get before the sun to follow the Olympic flame. As the torch travels through our communities, I'll be in the media caravan. It's supposed to be the best place for photos. Because north Utah County lies between Olympic venue sites, the torch run is the only "Olympic event" that will come to our small neck of Utah's woods. We are thrilled to be able to cover it. We will have photographers at many sites along the torch route as well. There are some drawbacks. Since this event happens on Wednesday, it will take place after the newspaper is printed for this week, but before it reaches your mailboxes. That means our coverage will be delayed a week. We are planning a full-color photo page on the front of our second section sec-tion to honor the event, but you won't see it until Feb. 13. That's one of the challenges of a weekly publication. The torch run is a historic event for our communities, communi-ties, and we will treat is as such, even though it will be history, so to speak, before we can get the photos in our newspaper. This should be fun. We know some celebrities are scheduled to run in American Fork and Lehi. There are gaps in the line-up, too, where yet-to-be disclosed MPs will be carrying the Olympic torch. Thanks from Eagles Editor: The Pleasant Grove Eagles would like to give a big thank you to all those who helped with this year's Sub For Santa. This year, with all the help, the Eagles lodge was able to provide toys and clothes for 93 kids and food for 31 families. A special'thanks goes out to K-mart K-mart where we did most of the shopping. Allen's Super Save for their help with the food, and Prpvo Postal Sen-ice for all their donations. Also IOOF and Rebecca, and to the chairpersons who set up the yard sale and parties. But a special spe-cial thanks to all those who gave so generously of their time and money to make this year's Christmas Christ-mas a good one for many kids. This year, because of all the generosity gen-erosity and contributions, an estimated esti-mated S 13.500 went out to help with Christmas. I mav be too late for some things of course, but I can still enjoy the excitement while it's here. I think one of the many, many reasons the Olympics appeals to me, and to many people, is that besides being an international gathering of people, it is an international gathering gather-ing of athletes. We get to learn about these athletes ath-letes and watch them strive to be the best in their sport. These athletes ath-letes don't have million-dollar contracts con-tracts and overinflated egos.
