Members of the board of education held the hearing in connection with their regular business meeting. Richard Smith, Lehi, told board members anyone over the age of 70 should not have to pay taxes as all their money goes to pay for either medicine or food. Smith, 71, said he represented three widows who are having financial finan-cial difficulties because of their taxes. "A lot of older people peo-ple can't handle it anymore," he said. Bob Wright, Orem, said he attends the hearing nearly every year because he is against tax increases. "Taxing entities need to be challenged at times," even though complaining com-plaining is an "exercise in futility." The truth-in-taxation hearing is a farce put in by legislators to get the burden bur-den off their backs, Wright said. "Your yearly salary increases more than, offset the increase in taxes" but older people don't have that advantage. Elizabeth McCabe, a single parent of three, including one in high school, one in junior high and one in elementary school, urged the school district dis-trict to be more accountable. Her taxes were nearly $900 this year, she said. District officials pointed out that this is the last of three years of the voted lee way, and that Alpine District taxes actually went down this year "What we are doing now is what the voters voted for us to do," said Marilyn Kofford, board chair. The district, she said, grows 800 students a year, that is one school a year. "Half of our buildings are trailers." Andrea Forsyth, board member, said when the district dis-trict gets 800 new students in a year, there has to be some place to put them. "Not only do we have to have a place to put them, we need teachers," she said. Patrons who figure their homes are valued wrong for taxation purposes were advised to call the Utah County Board of Equalization. In Loving Memory of Grace Hamaker There are things that can't be said by pen, Nor spoke by lip and tongile ' As remember places we have been, And things that we have done. I miss you when washing dishes, 1 And when I clean the floor ' missed you, when you went away, Each day I miss you more. Oh, how I long for companionship, That only you could give to me, And all the love and joy, As everyone could see. While along life's path we strolled, Clinging to the iron rod so strong, Trying to live close to Father, To help us choose right from wrong. Oh, I miss your loving touch, 1 Your beautiful smile, and more, Sweetheart, just keep on smiling, Until we meet upon that golden shore. C.W. Hamaker ml IDoooflEM 238 E.
