Navy officer Steven Weatherspoon leaves for assignment to Arabian Gulf Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Steven R. Weatherspoon, son of Marie Williams of Pleasant Grove, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook, home ported in Norfolk, Va. Weatherspoon is one of more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines deploying aboard the ships of the USS George Washington Carrier Battle Group and USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group. The groups are comprised of 11 surface sur-face combatants, two submarines, sub-marines, nine aircraft squadrons and one Marine Expeditionary Unit. Weatherspoon's ship, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, is one of the most powerful warships ever put to sea.
