The purpose, pur-pose, according to Sub-for-Santa is to help families learn independence. "By teaching families self-sufficiency self-sufficiency skills, they will be able to help themselves the following fol-lowing Christmas season and perhaps others as well" savs imowuiii, ouD-ior-oanta coordinator. "The underlying concept is to help families help themselves." Applicants will receive an applicant status letter within 7-10 business days after attending one of the workshops. Applicants will then be notified by a sponsor sometime before Dec. 18. Those interested in applying for Sub-for-Santa assistance should call 356-6200 for more information. Workshop dates and times are announced weekly at this num- ollment closes for twenty-one local schools ber. The application process is confidential, although sponsors may receive names, sizes and ages of children. The United Way Volunteer Center, who is coordinating the program, is also looking for willing individuals and groups to sponsor families, who have applied for help from the Sub-for-Santa program. Sponsors are asked to provide pro-vide two new items of clothing, two new toys, and a book for each child. A list of suggested toys and games is provided. United Way emphasizes the importance of meeting the basic needs of the children. "Sponsoring a family is a wonderful way to get involved in the community and help someone in need," says Kilstrom. "The Utah County Sub-for-Santa program allows Nu Skin Enterprises and its employees to be a force for good and give back to the community," said Jacob Scott, Community Relations Coordinator with Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. Nu Skin sponsored 35 children last Christmas. "Of all the volunteer activities activi-ties we participate in, this program pro-gram attracts the highest number num-ber of participants," said Scott. The Angel Tree and other programs in the community provide additional volunteer opportunities for those unable to sponsor a family. "1 Dfj; m. 2$.; ?ion '12. She was one of nine students and parents who asked board members to keep Lone Peak High School open to out-of-area students. Cynthia Warburton said she was in favor of the closure because American Fork High School enrollment will suffer if enrollment is not increased and teachers and programs will be lost. nr..
