Volleyball Kristin Richards took Timpanogos to the state title match for the fourth consecutive year and she 12 kills in her last high school match. Let's not forget Noelle Filimoeatu. Opposing teams weren't allowed to. If they neglected to find her, she would quickly remind them by spiking the ball down their throat. Richards was honored by Gatorade as the top volleyball volley-ball player in the country. Photos by Martin Harris 1 above) Timpanogos quarterback Paul Kruger looks for some running room. The T-Wolves put away a surprising Bruins team in straight sets 15-6, 15-6 to claim the school's second state title in the sport. Richards, who will be at The Bruins clicked at the right time and made an almost magical run in the state tournament. Their win against Pleasant Grove was one of the best matches of the year. Henrichsen came back from an ankle injury and looked like she never missed a beat. She was definitely defi-nitely one of the best setters around. Orem deserved a lot better bet-ter and became a victim of the Utah High School Association's poor thinking. The Tigers were one of the top volleyball teams in the state, top 10 at least. Unfortunately, they were robbed of a chance to participate partic-ipate in the tourney thanks to the UHSAA. In 2001, Region Seven received four playoff spots. In 2002, they only got three although that is not how it was originally drawn up during the last realignment. Anyway, the Tigers play in a region with three or four of the top programs in the state. They were competitive com-petitive against these teams, beating Mountain View once and nearly upsetting upset-ting Timpanogos but in the end, they were left out. It is doubtful the UHSAA will be able to fix its own mistake in time for next year. Seniors . Gina Sommerfeldt, Rachel Hale and Jenna Rasmussen deserved better. During the off-season, each of the three volleyball coaches stepped down. Girls Soccer It was all Mountain View again. The Bruins captured their third straight state title in the sport. They did it with a senior laden team but did find a freshman phenom. Seniors Courtney Asay, Kaycie Zimmerman, Haylee Cuthbert and Ali Williams are all going on to Division I soccer scholarships scholar-ships and coach Mike LaHargoue will have trouble trou-ble replacing them. He does have freshman Erin Salmon back. She was the second-leading scorer behind Asay on the team and maybe in 4A. Salmon had a year to learn from one of the best, Asay, and now she will have a lot of the attention focused squarely on her. Asay was named 4A MVP for the second year and named Gatorade's top soccer soc-cer player in Utah. All five of them were named to several sev-eral All-State teams. The Bruins didn't lose a game again. They haven't lost the last 40 times they have taken the field. The undefeated streak still continues con-tinues into a new season. Orem made it to the second sec-ond round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, they will have a lot of rebuilding to do. Their star forward, Amberlea Anderson, signed with the Cougars. Also Rachel Love and Brittany Call graduate. Timpanogos was still young but they did make improvements. They scored a goal on Mountain View for the first time in school history. his-tory. Next season, the last two years worth of experience could payoff in the form of a playoff spot. Cross Country Orem finally tamed the beast as the Orem girls team beat Mountain View and claimed its first title since 1992. Amber Harper led the pack again as she claimed her third straight individual individ-ual state championship. Mountain View finished second by a mere couple of points. Timpanogos' girls team finished fourth behind Provo. Utah County teams dominated the top five spots with American Fork finishing finish-ing fifth. Spanish Fork finished fin-ished seventh. On the boy's side, Mountain View ran away with the state title and then the team was named National Champions for the third time in five years. The Tigers finished fourth in the boys standings and again Utah County swept the top five spots. Timpview and Provo were second and third respectively respective-ly and the Cavemen again finished fifth. Lone Peak took seventh. Girls Tennis Timpanogos' Ashley Young was the main story out of Orem. She successfully successful-ly defended her state title in first singles. She led the Wolves to a fourth place finish fin-ish in state, the highest finish fin-ish for a Region Seven school. The Tigers came in at sixth and Pleasant Grove at fifth. Golf Orem finished seventh at state. The highest finish of any Utah County school. Pleasant Grove took eighth. Football Timpanogos was the king of the hill at least as far as the Orem schools are concerned. con-cerned. The T-Wolves finally beat Orem and finished second in the region standings. They had a melt down against Lone Peak or else they might have taken the top spot. With the returning players they have back, this team should be able to make a similar run next year. Josh Redd, a senior, and Thor Pili, a junior, were leaders on a tough defense but that was not the team's problem. The Wolves struggled at times with the ball. They could not move it against the Knights and they cannot can-not afford as many turnovers. Junior quarterback quarter-back Paul Kruger has a season sea-son under his belt and all summer to get his offensive team moving in the right direction. Running back Photo by Mm, Orem's Rachel Hale Is one of many senior hitters vol fans are going to miss next season. Jace Bramwell also returns. The biggest question facing fac-ing the Wolves .might be whether or not head coach Frank Bramall makes it back for the season. He is currently serving in the U.S. military overseas. Orem could not move the ball consistently at all. Quarterbacks got hurt and the position was like a carousel of who is healthy this week. They snuck into the playoffs despite winning just two games and actually gave Spanish Fork a good game before a late score by the Dons gave them the game. When the season finally came to an end, coach Alex Jacobson resigned. Mountain View ; dered after having s players depart for schools.
