Crest a-payson Year in Review Despite being a top seed, Timpanogos was one of several sev-eral first round upsets in the boys state tournaments. The Payson Lions were on fire and the Wolves could not stop them. The Tigers season really came down to their last seven games. After losing to Pleasant Grove and falling to 1-4 in the region, Orem was all but out of the mix. They had to win their last three games just to force a tie for the final playoff spot. It was about this time the seven seniors that led the team got together and decided decid-ed they did not want their season to end prematurely. They beat Mountain View on the road thanks to Lincoln Reid and Brooks Christiansen, who scored 14 and 12 respectively. Next up, region champs Timpanogos. It was all Brooks. Christiansen turned in a career-high 21 against the Wolves and offset the 21 put up by Nelson. Jonny Nielsen threw down 12 also in the 63-46 pasting. Lastly, in the Tigers third straight win-or-go home game, Lone Peak. This time Mike Gilbert stepped into the leadership role. The senior scored a season-high 12 as the Tigers pulled off the 48-39 win. Reid and Nielsen put in 10 4 Wi II each. After the game, a coin toss gave the Tigers the third seed from the region and a first round date with Provo. Traveling up to Ogden, I would of been happy if it was just close. Well, it was a blowout but it was the Bulldogs who were sent packing. Orem out-hustled, out defended, out played and quite honestly out-coached Provo on its way to a 65-45 win. The Tigers played keep away from Provo and limited limit-ed the number of touches they could get. Both teams combined for just seven winter sports 6- Pleasant Grove 7- Mtn. In the second half, it was expected Provo would come out fired up after a good "lecture". "lec-ture". It never happened. Besides the Wesleys, Tika and Tai, the Bulldogs had nothing offensively. Then it became the Reid show. He had several dunks but none mor exciting as he went over a Wesley with a jam. The Tigers were not done. They slaughtered Roy 50-28 to advance to the semifinals ' before falling 66-52 to Box Elder. Mountain View's season took a backwards step before it began as five players play-ers bolted from the program. pro-gram. Amazingly enough, the Bruins did not fall apart. Coach Jason Young regrouped his kids and led them to a respectable season. sea-son. Nate Allman and Danny Johnson will be back next season to help them build upon this year. The highlight for the Bruins had to be beating the Tigers at Orem. Girls Basketball Mountain View did what everyone expected them to do but Orem did not make the task easy. The Bruins went undefeated unde-feated against in-state competition com-petition with the only blemishes blem-ishes being two losses from the Nike Tournament in Arizona. However, the unstoppable Bruins got a real scare from Orem. The Tigers took a lead early and held it almost to half-time. Heather Keith and Tiffany Peterson combined com-bined for 29 points but Mallary Gillespie and Heather and Hollie Hansen combined for 39. Orem was in the game till the end before the Bruins finally pulled away to a 56-43 win. It was the best game the Bruins had gotten from an in-state foe since the 2002 championship game. The Bruins cruised through the rest of the season sea-son and the first two rounds of the playoffs before meeting meet-ing Timpview in the semis. Ashley Henry made her presence felt in the paint as she scored 17 points and the Bruins earned a spot in the title game with a 61-47 win. The Tigers went as far as their starters could take them. Orem looked to Peterson, Keith and Marsha Heimuli to score and to Aubrey Stay to take care of and distribute the ball. The formula was successful for 17-6 record. The Tigers went into the state tourney as a two seed and destroyed Provo in the opening round. By the end of the 55-27 massacre, every varsity player had logged some playing time and nine different players scored. The Highland and Murray games were much closer but both wins for the Tigers to set the stage for a third meeting with the Bruins. The championship game was the most exciting of the year, as it should be when you have the two best in the state going at it. However, two factors went against Orem in the 49-44 loss. First, the Hansen twins. The Mountain View seniors were determined not to go out with a loss. Heather scored 22 and Hollie added 13. Second, the Tigers could not get production from the bench. During the last three games of the state tournament, tourna-ment, the Tiger bench scored a total of three points. Peterson, Heimuli and Keith all scored double-figures double-figures to keep the game close. The T-Wolves season should have been different. They were not of the caliber of Mountain View or Orem but they should of been better bet-ter than Lone Peak. Timpanogos season can be summed up by the word turnovers. They committed way too many. The bright spot was Brynee Nelson.
