"I never thought we were going to lose this game," Orem coach Ray McCoy selves an early hole. The Tigers scored in the first inning off back-to-back doubles by Trent Barney and Brooks Christiansen but they gave the run back in the second thanks to a pair of errors. Then in the third, they made things worse for themselves. With two outs and a runner on first, the Pirates' Kyle Huntsman wild pitch allowing Huntsman to score from third. In their last two games, the normally reliable Tigers committed 11 errors, result ing in nine unearned runs. Despite the defense McCoy, who is Orem's third starting pitcher, pitched a solid seven innings when it was needed most. Unfortunately for Tigers, his second hit in the bottom of the seventh took a bad hop and hit Robbie McKinney in the heel of the foot forcing him out. said. "I was waiting for the big hit to come. I'm in shock that it didn't happen this time." Orem had its chances but in the end it was poor defense that gave this win to Cyprus. With five errors resulting in three unearned runs, the Tigers dug them- doubles to center field. The Orem center fielder could not come up with the ball cleanly allowing the runner from first to score. The next batter reached on an error by the Tiger first baseman setting up runners on the corners. "He had them off balance the whole game," coach McCoy said about his sophomore soph-omore pitcher. The Tigers had a couple of shots to rally late in the game. In the sixth, Barney singled sin-gled and Christiansen doubled dou-bled to bring the Tigers within one run. The Cyprus coach was not going to watch the lead disappear and brought in Huntsman to finish off the Tigers. The new pitcher left Christiansen stranded on second. In the seventh, Robbie McKinney singled to put the tying run on with only one out. However, the Tigers got the bad break. Matt Woolsey singled between first and second and the ball caught McKinney on the back of the foot resulting in the second out of the inning and Woolsey on first. "We've had so many great breaks this year. It's not long before the law of averages aver-ages catches up to us," McCoy said about what might have been if the ball had not hit McKinney. Orem still had a chance. Andy Wilding hit a hard grounder that was gobbled up on a great diving stop by Cyprus first baseman Joe Wice. He ran to first for the final out. The Tigers lose five key seniors: pitcher Andy Wilding, second baseman Woolsey, shortstop Christiansen and outfielders outfield-ers Ryan Fehlberg and McKinney. Maybe most importantly is the loss of head coach Ray McCoy, who announced his retirement earlier in the tournament. This year has been the Tigers best finish since 1997 when they won the 5A crown. "I am proud to have coached them. I'm gonna miss them," McCoy said in his final interview of the season. "They never gave up, never gave in." MARTIN HARRIS Times Sports Editor As Mountain View coach Cal Jones packed up after his team's 11-2 loss to Murray that sends his Bruins home for the season, he knows his team over-achieved over-achieved this year. He took a team that started two sophomores and six juniors to a fifth-place finish in state. The Bruins repeated as region champs despite major improvements improve-ments by Orem and Timpanogos. However, in the end, it was the team's strength last year that did them in this year pitching. Erika Jones, last year's starter and 4A state MVP, was missed late in the tourney. tour-ney. In their last two games, Bruin pitching gave up 14 runs on 19 hits. "We just didn't have any pitching left," coach Jones said. "We overachieved this year because we had good hitting, pitching and defense in important spots during the season." Mountain View scored first thanks to a JaNae Wright single and heads up base running by Felicia Marzan. Marzan rounded the bases on a sacrifice bunt, an error and a wild pitch. Senior Kaycie Zimmerman started the game against Murray and threw a perfect first and second innings before get ting into trouble in the third. With two on and one out, Murray's Melinda Johnson hit a double to the outfield to tie the game at one apiece. The Spartans were not finished and the Bruin defense helped keep the inning going. After three errors in the field, Murray scored six runs in the inning, four were unearned. Mallary Gillespie scored the run on a two-base two-base error and a ground out by Ashley Henry. The mood in the dugout was unusually unusual-ly jovial for the Bruins despite the circumstances. "They know they'll be back," Jones said of the high spirits in the dugout. "Good pitching is going to win it for you. We'll work on that all summer."
