Show AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Page 11 NEWS AND IDEAS FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS announces Star ar can Thursday, January 15, 2009 didetes Sherilyn Frost NORTH COUNTY STAFF American Fork High School recently re-cently announced its Sterling Scholar Schol-ar candidates for the 2008-09 school year. These students will represent the school at the region and state level lev-el and are vying for the title of state Sterling Scholar in their designated categories. For the past 12 years the Sterling Scholar application process has been under the direction of French teacher Rachel McFarland. McFarland does everything from advertising the program pro-gram to encouraging and helping to prepare the applicants for the initial Interview process where the school's candidates are selected. From there, she meets with the candidates on a regular basis coaching them through practice interviews and completion of their portfolios. Representing 12 categories, the students began the process early in the school year through an application, applica-tion, recommendation and interview process before the school's representatives represen-tatives were selected. To help the community get to know these students, a brief biography biogra-phy on each is included below. Ashley Arnold is the trade and technical education candidate. She is the daughter of Rosie Arnold and Lloyd Arnold. Her plans after high school are many and include earning a bachelor's degree in animal science sci-ence from Utah State University. She added, "I would also like to serve an LDS mission, travel the world, become be-come a mom and have cute kids and own a huge ranch." She has been actively involved in 4-H since she was a young girl and served as the Utah state ambassador. Throughout high school she has been actively involved in FFA and is a student stu-dent advisor. She also is a member of the school's math club and actively involved in her church. Throughout the Sterling Scholar candidate application process, Ashley Ash-ley said that she has learned that procrastination is not an option. She also learning how to organize her thoughts into a concise manner. She thanks two of her teachers, Mr. Anderson An-derson and Ms. Shelley for helping her have the confidence to be a part of the process. Representing the visual arts category cat-egory is Melissa Beasley who is the daughter of Debbie Wagner. After high school graduation, she plans to attend Snow College majoring in art. She is interested in pursing a career as an animation director or a character charac-ter designer. She is also interested in becoming an art teacher as well as doing freelance art. During her high school career she has been actively involved in the school's Art Club and orchestra. While holding a job, she has also taken AP art classes and been actively active-ly involved in her church's Young Women program. She has earned the LDS church's Young Women Recognition Award and enjoys staying involved with friends, family and church as much as possible. When asked why she began the application process she said, "I love business and I want to excel as much as possible. From this experience, I hope to learn how to write better, complete an interview better, and just become a better student and person." Squire is Jasmine Fierro. She is the daughter of Elisandro and Petrita Fierro. Post-high school plans are to attend University of Utah majoring in English and eventually becoming an English teacher. Throughout high school, she has been involved in journalism, orchestra, orches-tra, National Honor Society, youth council, French club and poetry club. She said that she is learning a lot about herself and the meaning of hard work. She hopes to use all she is learning to qualify for a scholarship scholar-ship opportunity for college. Eliza Garlick is the daughter of Steven and Dianne Garlick. She represents the category of foreign language. Of her post -high school plans she said, "I have always wanted to be an elementary school teacher, preferably the third grade." She plans to attend Brigham Young University majoring in elementary education and would like to serve an LDS mission. As a member of the Chamber Choir, she has both accompanied on the piano and participated in solo, and ensemble competitions receiving superior ratings. She has also participated in drama, soccer, cross country, various clubs and has been a school newspaper writer. Representing the category of speechdrama is Megan Hatch, the daughter of Richard and Leisa Hatch. Post high school plans include attending Brigham Young University Univer-sity as a communications major in the fall. She has been a Lone Peak debate team member for the past three years, a member of the HOPE squad, a member of the National Honor Society, So-ciety, the dance company manager and currently serves as a student body officer. She is also an active member of her church. "Because American Fork High School doesn't currently have a debate de-bate team, I hope that through this process, interest can be generated around this activity and others will be able to enjoy the benefits of debate," de-bate," said Hatch. She said she is excited to learn all she can from all the other candidates that she meets through this process. Brianne Huntsman is the daughter of John and Helen Huntsman and represents social sciences. Of her plans for after high school graduation she said, "I would like to go to college out of state, preferably SCU or The American University in Washington, D.C., where I will major in psychology or international relations. After college graduation, I would like to work with the United Nations in assisting women in developing devel-oping countries." She is a news editor for the school's newspaper The Fork aster and a member of youth court. She enjoys theater and participates in choir and voice lessons. Lindsay Matheson represents the music category and is the daughter of Boyd and Debbie Matheson. After high school graduation, she wants to attend BYU majoring in business. She also plans to continue accompanying accompa-nying on the piano and participating in music events. She is involved in the choir, musical musi-cal theater and is a student body officer. of-ficer. She also teaches private piano lessons and is enrolled in three AP classes. She is involved in her church as serves as the ward organist and choir pianist. When asked why she began the application process she said, "Since I haven't been able to compete and participate in big piano performances performanc-es due to an arm injury, I wanted to see how far I could go with my music without the typical lesson, competition and performance experience. expe-rience. I also had a lot of amazing friends who helped convince me that my service through music could be recognized as an accomplishment." He would like to continue his education at MIT after serving an LDS mission and plans to major in physics and chemistry. He is the recorder for the American Ameri-can Fork Youth City Council, president presi-dent of the National Honor Society and leads the math club and the technology tech-nology club. He also spends about six hours each week tutoring and is working on completing an Eagle project. Kevin Secretan is the son of Shau-na Shau-na Secretan and represents the computer com-puter technology category. He plans to attend Digi.Pen Institute of Technology Tech-nology in Redmond, Wash, where he plans to learn the skills necessary to construct hardware and program complex software including video games. He believes learning these skills will offer many options with a computer career. He has been a member of the computer com-puter club and chess club for three years and has been the president for the past two years. He enjoys spending spend-ing time programming or reading material related to computers. Through this experience, he said he is learning to improve his writing skills and to stop procrastinating. He looks forward to completing his portfolio and hopes that this experience experi-ence will help him with the college and scholarship application process. Keenan Smout is the son of Randall and Cori Smout and represents the dance category. After high school graduation, he plans to serve an LDS mission. He would then like to attend a Utah university and major in mechanical me-chanical engineering. Throughout his high school career, he has been actively involved with the school's ballroom team beginning in his ninth grade year. He has also been a member of French club and math club. Smout credits his friends, parents, par-ents, ballroom partner and ballroom teacher for giving him the courage to apply. He stated, "This experience has helped me realize how applicable my dance achievements are to my life. It has also helped me learn how I can best represent myself with my achievements." Kenneth J. Squire represents the math category and is the son of Glen and Stacey Squire. Included in his post-high school plans are attending attend-ing Brigham Young University and studying either finance or engineering. engineer-ing. He plans to serve an LDS mission after a year of college and then completing com-pleting his studies upon his return Tutoring at the city library and homework has kept him busy during high school, but he also has enjoyed playing soccer, Jr. Jazz and church basketball.
