You likely know someone who has some form of heart disease, or perhaps you have it yourself. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. That is beginning to change as research has shown that heart disease is very much influenced by our personal habits and can be improved and your life prolonged if you will change your behavior. behav-ior. For starters, controlling weight, cholesterol and blood pressure, while exercising and avoiding smoking, are shown to be of great benefit. By implementing healthy habits, you can successfully combat and reduce your own heart risks. I'd like to tell you about an annual local program that helps women focus on having a healthy heart. It is sponsored spon-sored by the Heart and Vascular Vas-cular Services department at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and is called "The 100-Day 100-Day Heart Challenge." Women from across Utah County are invited to improve their cardiovascular health by taking part in the 100-Day Heart Challenge. Fifteen women age 30 and above will be selected to be part of the challenge to see which one can improve her heart health the most over the span of 100 days. Applicants will be selected to participate near the end of January by a team of physicians and caregivers and will receive the following free services during the challenge: chal-lenge: I Pre-screenings (weight, body fat, complete cholesterol profile, blood glucose, blood pressure, waist circumfer- Economic development slow but going Lance Madigan NORTH COUNTY STAFF It seems all we hear about is the economic crisis, bailouts and bankruptcies. However, northern Utah County cities aren't doing quite so bad. "It's not what it used to be," Debby Lauret, American Fork economic development director, direc-tor, said.People are being -more cautious." For instance, The Meadows development has been delayed. "It is not a point of if, but when," she said. JCPenney, for instance, was to be an anchor for continued development. "They have delayed, but not tabled the project." "The Doug Smith project is coming along," said Lauret. "They are adding a few restaurants res-taurants and a strip mall." Lauret also added that there are quite a few little projects going on. "Mona Lisa is a consignment con-signment shop in downtown," she said. "Consignment is kind of a new thing for us. I like the idea people are recycling more. You may be interested in knowing that Pleasant Grove resident Shelly Weber took home the gold at the conclusion conclu-sion of last year's 100-Day Heart Challenge. At the onset of the contest, Shelly was admittedly ad-mittedly overweight, she had high cholesterol and blood pressure and, like many of us, she was a sucker for junk food. "When I went on the diet, my whole family joined in to support me," Shelly said. "We stocked the refrigerator with healthy food that was easy to grab when we got hungry." of Commerce Doug Meldrum agreed. "We aren't doing great, but we are doing pretty good, comparably," he said. "It has definitely slowed down. Typically, Typi-cally, developers are making deals for a year or two out.-Now out.-Now it is three or four. The biggest challenge is getting funding for projects. 'Funded' means you can build. If you " aren't funded, you really don't know what is going to happen." hap-pen." That is why Meldrum said he and others are excited for such projects as the Traverse Mountain Outlet Mall. "It is fully funded. They will be breaking ground in the spring or early summer," he said, adding that the first phase of the project will offer about 260,000 square feet of retail space, and is mostly sold out to this point. "They are starting to work on Phase II, so that's an excellent excel-lent sign," Meldrum said. Although specific retailers haven't been announced yet, Meldrum said a major tenant was signed in November, and he would expect completion of the first phase by fall of 2010. Meldrum said there is also interest in developing develop-ing around the new Smith's Marketplace, as well as other areas in the city. At the conclusion of the contest, Shelly had lost 25 pounds and brought her cholesterol and blood pressure pres-sure figures within a healthy range. A year later, she's still going strong. At the conclusion of the 100-Day Heart Challenge, a final health assessment will determine the winner. The woman who makes the most improvement in the screening categories will be designated as the winner. Consequently, she'll receive: I A $500 Visa gift card I A two-year membership to the Utah Valley Wellness Center A healthier heart. Prescription for Health is a weekly healthxtnd wellness column by Paul Robinson, M.t. Dr. Robinson is the medical director of American Fork Hospital and has been practicing medicine for 29 years as a general surgeon. If you have comments about this week's column, or suggestions for future topics, please e-mail Dr. Robinson at prescrip'tionforhealth imail.org.- mographics for the area are fantastic," said Meldrum, speaking of Lehi in general. With other projects such as the Utah Department of Transportation's east -west Pioneer Crossing to beginning soon as well, Meldrum said he felt confident other projects will also begin in the coming year. UDOT's announcement of delays on such projects as the 2100 North corridor have taken their toll, however. "The regional mall set for the north had submitted a concept plan, but pulled it because they wanted to work closely with Thanksgiving Point," said Meldrum. "That project directly hinged on the 2100 corridor. With the delayed funding for the road, the project was delayed. Down the road we are optimistic that it will move forward. ... Most of Lehi's taxes are collected from retail shopping centers," said Meldrum. Other projects are also moving ahead in the north county area, including a new Wal-Mart and a bigger Intermountain Healthcare facility fa-cility in Saratoga Springs and another Wal-Mart in Cedar Hills. So while the economy may be slowing, it hasn't stopped. "It's a good time to start something," added Lauret.
