"It is amazing that we've In the military, there's a gulf between the officer and the enlisted man or woman wom-an historically so, and probably for sood reason. VISIT USONLINE AI Nearly all the Veterans talk about it. What many readers may not know is that a parallel gap exists between officers' wives. When physicians enter the military, they are commissioned com-missioned and so are their wives, sort of. The medical officer of-ficer in this excerpt was commissioned in 1992 (along with his wife, sort of). Names have been changed. Wmm Thursday, January 15, 2009 -vi r' Vi H 77 Lllli m f hen my husband hus-band was commis sioned a cap tain in the Air Force, I didn't understand at all what it meant to be an "of f icers wife." I received no training at all, and my learning curve was very steep. My first experience was in the commissary. You are supposed to follow certain arrows in the aisles, but I was just going up and down, as I normally do in grocery stores. So I was pushing my cart the wrong way down an aisle, with no idea that I was doing anything wrong. Then a man yelled at me and stopped me. That really shook me up. My second day, I drove on to the base, but I didn't know I was supposed to turn my lights down as I approached the gate. I just drove up and handed the guards my pass. They made me get out of the car, and then they dressed me down, saying, "You are an officer's wife! You are expected ex-pected to know betterr,--. ... I went home crying and told my husband, "If this is the military, I want to go home!" Nor did I understand that I was expected to join the Officers' Wives Club. I got chewed on a bit for not going, go-ing, and when I did go, I felt very uncomfortable, because I didn't understand the ranks the women were talking about, nor did I understand the purpose of the club. It basically added to the community com-munity by planning certain events and doing community service projects. When I went to the first meeting, I was asked, "Now who are you?" "I'm Sandra Smith." "But who are you?" They wanted to know my husband's rank. I hadn't realized I should have said, "I'm Captain Smith's wife," then add, "He's in charge of the public health office on the base." I'd just come in thinking, "I'm just me, and I'm here." The club members were very status conscious, and in the military, your status has to do with your husband's rank. You are to fit in exactly where your husband fits in. My husband was a captain, and I was sometimes in the company of generals' wives. For me to speak to them was out of place. I was supposed to deal with second lieutenants lieuten-ants and first lieutenants and captains; mostly only colonels and lieutenant colonels and their wives could speak to generals. So it was a little exasperating, ex-asperating, because I couldn't figure out the rules at first. We were also expected to go to a lot of dinners, and 1 did learn very quickly how to play that role to be gracious gra-cious while sitting next to generals, to be very polite and ask questions. I never did fit into the Officers' Wives Club; it just wasn't a good fit for me. I more or less stopped going, though I'd show up if the club needed help with a service project. The pressure to drink is important when you're at a party and alcohol is served. People bang their champagne cham-pagne glasses, and you are supposed to follow the rules at the "grog" bowl. People would pour all kinds of liquor into that bowl, and then set some very arbitrary rules, for example, not to use your fork during the entire meal. If you break a rule, someone bangs a champagne glass, and you are to go up and drink whatever is in the bowl. I was very conscious to pay attention to every little rule as I ate. (There are now non-alcoholic grog bowls.) Next week: Sandra splashes water and sea gunk on a general In civilian dress. I hope readers noted that brilliantly concise sentence you sometimes get in oral histories: "I'm just me, and I'm here." CALL 756-7669 TO PLACE ONE TODAY Need Some Extra HOLIDAY CASH?
