Lindsay said that a woman who had a child with disabilities disabili-ties moved here from the Salt Lake area and called and asked Lindsay what programs were available for those with special needs. "At the time," Lindsay recalls, "we didn't have anything." any-thing." That phone call was the catalyst that led to meetings with the mother and other advocates ad-vocates for the disabled, and, Lindsay said, "From there, it was just easy putting it together. to-gether. The groundwork was laid in Salt Lake...A parent had a child with disabilities and wanted to keep them active and doing things." Lindsay is in charge of an adapted T-ball program that now serves an estimated 30 to 55 individuals annually. He said participants range from those with minor disabilities, such as slight autism, to those who are more severely handicapped handi-capped physically, and use wheelchairs or walkers. "Our numbers were higher at one time," Lindsay said. "But Mapleton started a recreation department with T-ball in the south end of the valley. Before that, we drew from all over the county." Most of the patrons now served by Orem's program pro-gram come from the north end of the county, and those in the North County Newspapers Daily Herald Publishing Co. 399 E. The T-ball program generally gener-ally serves those in the five to 21 age range, Lindsay said, although several adults have participated, too. This year, the leagues were divided into age ranges of 5-12, 13-17, and 18 and up. There is flexibility in establishing the groups. "If there are not enough . participants in one group, we combine with another," Lindsay Lind-say said. Like other youth sports, the program relies heavily on parent par-ent volunteers for coaching and "team mom"services. "At games," Lindsay said, "everyone is willing to help out parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts. There is a lot of support. That's what it's really re-ally all about, for the kids." During the six-week season, games are played on the grass field at Westmore Elementary where, Lindsay said, there are large shade trees for the grandpa and grandma cheering cheer-ing section. Because the participants par-ticipants come from so many different cities', extra practices are not held. Fees for participating in the program this year were $27, which covered the cost of matching-color T-shirts, the trophy awarded to each participant, par-ticipant, equipment, and having hav-ing a staff member on site to coordinate the activity. Swimming is another adapted adapt-ed youth sport taking place in Orem. John Lau, the aquatics coordinator co-ordinator for the city, said the adapted aquatics program is a special one-onone class where an experienced andor trained instructor works with a youngster young-ster with special needs. The sessions are scheduled in with regular swimming lessons at both the outdoor SCERA Park pools and in the indoor Fitness Center pool. The program is popular, and the slots fill up quickly, Lau said, so individuals also have the option to sign up for a private pri-vate instructor. Lau estimated there have been 30 participants this year from as far away as Lehi and Draper to south of Spanish Fork. "I've had pretty much nothing noth-ing but good feedback from my instructors," Lau said. "I've been here a year now, and have not heard a bad comment yet." Lau said the one-on-one time is a huge benefit because the instructors can focus 100 percent per-cent of their time on the child and his or her individual skill development. "It's good for (the swimmers) swim-mers) to be able to get comfortable com-fortable in the water, and they learn skills a whole lot quicker than if they were in a group," Lau said. Local youth with special needs are also included in the community fishing program sponsored by the state Division of Wildlife Resources, Lindsay said. Participants meet at Vivian Viv-ian Park in Provo Canyon and at the Lindon Boat Harbor and have 15 minutes to one-half hour of instruction on a variety . of fishing-related topics before enjoying the opportunity to fish. At the end of the sessions, a fish fry is held. Photo courtesy John Lau Hans Hafen and Lisa Knight are two of the instructors in Orem's Adaptive Sports Program.
