During second-round playoff action in Sandy Saturday, the Jordan Beetdiggers overcame American Fork 4-3, ending the Cavemen's season. American Fork acting head coach Guy Duersch said, "At Viewmont, our guys played really well. The score was tied at 1-1, but we pulled out to a 4-1 lead. "Aaron Hill threw the last two innings for us, and he did great against them. Stu Duersch Du-ersch and Skylar Davis came up with three double plays for us to help us keep Viewmont in check. Ryan Evans threw for the first five innings, and held them to two runs." American Fork coach Jarod Ingersoll said, "Our pitching and hitting were really good tonight. Our hitters were more aggressive at the bat as well. They that put the ball in play a lot faster. That put a lot more pressure on Kearns fielders to react quicker than they could." The game opened with pitcher Jim Davis striking out Edgar Pimentel. Walked by Davis, No. 2 hitter Kelton Ken-ner Ken-ner moved into scoring position posi-tion through an error. Jordan Higbee singled him home, but Davis didn't let the Cougars pick up additional runs during the inning. In the bottom of the first, Tanner Christ ensen singled into right, then worked his way around to third base. Leading off at that base, he saw teammate Andy Lewis bat a line fly towards him. In the bottom half, after shortstop Stu Duersch had picked off a fly ball from Alex Ozkauski, Jordan's lead-off hitter, hit-ter, Parker Perry doubled off pitcher Aaron Hill, then came home on a Kelton Caldwell single. Caldwell soon came home on a balk. The next inning opened with Evans getting hit by a pitch. Before any Caveman could reel him in, Evans got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second. Shortstop Reggie Jones turned a double play that retired American Fork to the field early. Jake Perry's flying out into right permitted Kearns to take its 1-0 lead into the next inning. Davis fanned two batters, then caused Pimentel to fly out to shortstop Stu Duersch. American Fork took command com-mand of the game when Ryan Evans singled in Jake Miller and Brett Pulsipher in the bottom bot-tom of the second. The Cavemen's first lead didn't last long, for in the top of the third, Higbee doubled in Steve Paulsen to tie the score at two. The Cougars went on to load the bases on two outs. Before they could break the 2-2 tie, Duersch tagged Matt Orwin in a fielder's choice play at second. The Cavemen finally ascended ascend-ed onto the scoreboard in the fourth. Having been walked by Garner at the opening of the inning, Jake Blackhurst raced home on a passed ball. Before American Fork could catch up with Jordan, Duersch got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second and Jordan got a groundout. Taylor Garner opened the seventh by slugging a center-field center-field single. In response, Jones turned up a devastating double play. Logan Whitaker hit a center-field single but a throw from center fielder Caldwell gunned him down at second, ending the game. Guy Duersch said, "I felt the guys came here wanting to play hard. A two-run homer hit by Bo Fisher put Hillcrest on the board in the top of the first. AF girls hoops take first in San Diego tourney Beky Beaton NORTH COUNTY Members of the American Fork girls basketball program have concluded a very successful suc-cessful summer by winning a San Diego tournament championship cham-pionship on July 12. According to coach Corey Clayton, the event was a national na-tional recruiting tournament sponsored by West Coast Elite, which is a club in San Diego. The Cavemen competed for three days in the open division. divi-sion. The team was the only one representing a single high school as the others teams were all club teams with players play-ers attending various schools. The event was attended by coaches representing more than 50 colleges. "Our girls won our pool by winning four games and losing one, in overtime," said Clayton. "In the championship game, we defeated a Houston club team called the Texas Blazers." That squad had just finished sixth at the "End of the Trail" tournament in Oregon with a 6-1 record. "They were 4-0 school presentations and also some book signings.
