The Lindon City Council voted ill I heir July 17 meeting to place ii Ixmd issue on the ballot to help cover the costs of a recreation center "That is the way the decision deci-sion nerds to be made," said Lindon City Council member Lmdsey Bayless "If the community com-munity wants it, they should be able lo decide." In a study they conducted in Mav. V( B ) Architecture estimated es-timated the cost of the facility at anywhere between $16 mil lion and $20 million, depending depend-ing on the amenities included in the building. City officials said that the city could pay for one third of those construction cost out of sales tax, while still meeting meet-ing other city obligations and needs. The remainder of construction costs could only come from a general election bond. If the bond is passed, city staffers estimated the cost for the full facility to each family who owned a $.500,000 home would be approximately $ir.;4amonthor$18Hper year over a 25-year period. A study conducted by Dan Jones and Associates of 330 Lindon residents indicates that 77 percent of those surveyed saw a definite or probable need for the facility in the city. Lindon resident Merilee Schofield agrees with that group. She has three young girls, and said that she thinks the proposal is a necessary part of the future of Lindon. "Pleasant Grove's pool Ls overcrowded, and Orem's is crowded too," Schofield said. "We need somewhere we can go that is our own." When it came to the bond issue in the survey, however, the margin of those in favor wasn't as large. Only 28 percent responded that they were definitely for, with 29 percent saying they were probably for the bond initiative. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed were definitely defi-nitely against the bond initiative initia-tive and 15 percent said they would probably be against it. "We consider 60 percent a consensus, and on this issue, there is 57 percent," said Dan Jones, owner of Dan Jones and Associates. Jones also said that in the open-ended section of the study, many respondents said "the sooner the better" in terms of getting the building constructed in the city. Schofield Scho-field said she agreed. "I think the activity level of the city would go up, and it would be a good thing for families to do together in our own city," she said. Man killed on Interstate 15 DAILY HERALD A man was killed Tuesday when he drove off Interstate 15 after clipping a semitrailer while changing lanes. The accident was at 8:15 a.m. Brandon Waite, 22, of Orem was pronounced dead at the scene. Waite was trapped in the car after the accident. Troopers Troop-ers and Orem police and paramedics para-medics were unable to read his vital signs until they got him out. "The car was badly damaged, dam-aged, so it took them awhile to get him out, but he had passed away prior to them getting him out," Utah Highway Patrol Pa-trol Trooper Preston Raban said. Raban said witnesses said Waite was weaving in and out of traffic in his Volvo passenger passen-ger car at more than 90 mph on Southbound 1-15 in Orem. He clipped the tail end of a semitrailer while changing lanes and vaulted off the right side of the road, hitting a tree near mile marker 271. Waite was wearing his seat belt, Raban said. He said neither troopers nor police believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. They will do a toxicology report to confirm that. -J t-11 l ji IJLrll (0 1 1 1 Aw 1P Bringing in Watermelons, Canteloupes, plums, squash & cucumbers m Cherries t,odis Apricots 'Pink 'Eye, tetuvs m Jfottey c . . ail rrura nm .T3iwrm Aspen Mortgage Your Home Loan Specialises U API sstrc.coM UTAH'S LENDING LEADER FOR: Nov liomc purchase loans.
