Local animal shelter helps pets find way home Laura Giles NORTH COUNTY STAIT In an effort to help lost pets find their way back home, the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter has begun injecting animals with microchips. As of July l, any dog that is adopted ad-opted out of the center will have a microchip. Pet owners can also bring their pets to the shelter for the simple procedure. proce-dure. According to shelter director direc-tor Tug Gettling, a number is assigned to each animal and that number is on the micro - chip, which is about the size of a grain of rice. The chip is injected between the shoulder blades just under the skin. "It's like giving a vaccine," said (jettling. "Some dogs don't even know we're doing it." The staff at the shelter is trained to inject the microchips. micro-chips. When an animal has a microchip, mi-crochip, it can be scanned at animal shelters or veterinarian veterinar-ian offices if ever lost. When scanned, the number shows up, which can be looked up on a registry to find the owner's information. "The microchip process is only as good as the owner keeping updated," said Gettling. Get-tling. "They need to update phone numbers, change of address and new owners," he said. "It's awesome. It helps us If you go North Utah Valley Animal Shelter Where: 193 N. 2000 West, Lindon Telephone: 785-3442 Hours: Monday through Friday, Fri-day, 9 a. m.-6 p.m. Microchip for pets: $20, no appointment needed out to find the owner pretty fast," said shelter employee Nathan White. "Most of the time, when dogs come in, their collars are gone. Although all dogs in Utah must be licensed, those licenses licens-es fall off with the collars. The shelter has been scanning scan-ning lost pets for the microchips micro-chips since it opened, but has just begun the actual micro chip injection program. "We have planned on doing this since we opened the shelter," shel-ter," said Gettling. "We scan lost animals for the microchips when they first come in and again before euthanized," said White. At times, it is difficult to find the microchip because it has migrated. The chips cannot be detected by looking at or feeling feel-ing the animal. While it is the shelter's policy to microchip every dog that is available for adoption, cats can also receive the chips at the new owner's request. Pet owners can bring their dogs or cats to the shelter for the procedure at any time during dur-ing business hours at a cost of $20. "Wj have found lots of dogs for o ,v ners," said Gettling.
