Show Kenyan freedom advocate visits Cedar Hills New Utah - ThurMlay, February 5. 2K)4 - Page 1 1 One of America's best friends is visiting in Cedar Hills. Stephen. Gathungu considers con-siders himself such a friend of the country that he has built a center in his native Kenya, called "Friends of America Foundation." ' He is staying at the home of Myron and Sher Hassard of Cedar Hills. He met them when they were serving an IDS mission in Massachusetts. Massachu-setts. Gathungu had fled to the United States when terrorists ter-rorists disrupted his operation, opera-tion, destroyed his business and harmed his family. They slashed his wife with a knife and broke the arm of one of his sons. Today they are looking for monetary help to rebuild the non-profit facility. It houses operations where the residents learn about the United States and operate relief programs to help their numbers, many of whom are without sufficient food and shelter. Behind the. foundation's headquarters, there are 29 apartments with washrooms, wash-rooms, kitchen, dining area and toilets. The facility is serving 113 ill and aged people and orphans free of charge. They consider they have the potential of serving serv-ing 9,300 Kenyans who live in neighboring villages. The Gathungus have used their own money to build the facility and purchase pur-chase supplies such as food, clothing, water tanks, garden gar-den seeds and mosquito netting. Stephen said he was able to do it because at one time he operated a successful suc-cessful construction business. busi-ness. He estimates they have spent $600,000 of their own money to help the people. "Since I was a small boy, I have participated in (worked to overcome) almost every problem we have in Africa he said. "My mother taught me to share with friends. If not, God will not share his good things with you." He built the foundation based on those principles, which he has seen embodied embod-ied in the American people. "The only way to express my deep feeling was to name this institution Friends of America Foundation." Founda-tion." "I have appreciated that Americans try as much as they can to see that other countries are better off, with food, water, health and human respect," he said. The attack on the community commu-nity smashed their vehicles and machinery and destroyed their business and part' of the foundation. Fear gripped the community and they have had little peace. Yet Gathungu plans on returning to Kenya in mid-February. mid-February. "I have many things yet to do," he said. "I want to drill a well. Now they have to walk two days to get water. Several women die every time they go for water. I want to get some medical supplies and, of course, food for the people." Anyone who would like to help the effort may send a check to "Friends of America Ameri-ca Foundation," in care of Myron Hassard, 10219 North Oak Road West, Cedar Hills, Utah 84062.
