But even with their growing numbers, it hasn't been easy being the minority in a predominantly predominant-ly Mormon culture. "We start from a point of tension," explains Reverend Greg Johnson of Standing Together Ministries. "We move into a neighborhood and maybe we're the only non-Mormon family in the neighborhood, or maybe there might be a few. You have a sense that they all know about you, they've talked about you. "They know you don't attend the ward. Some people peo-ple develop a complex where there's a kind of us and them mentality, even if no one's been unkind or unpleasant. In fact, they may have been very pleasant pleas-ant to you, but you know you're not one of them and that most everyone is one of them. It's an environment that can create tension right ofTthe bat." To cope with the tension, most Evangelical ,Chris-tians ,Chris-tians either isolate themselves them-selves from their Mormon neighbors or embrace the LDS religion to fit in. Those who isolate themselves fear intermingling could pollute or dilute their beliefs. ' And the segregation occurs on both sides.1 There are countless instances of Mormons not allowing their children to play with non-Mormons non-Mormons and vice versa. All too often doctrinal '.arguments '.argu-ments and "Bible bashing" are the main interaction when Mormons and1 isVan-gelical isVan-gelical Christians meet. "In a sense we're more alike than we want to admit," said Johnson. "I live in a neighborhood where most of my neighbors share my values and that's a wonderful won-derful thing." Evangelical Christians and Mormons both support the sanctity of the family, for example. And both believe baptism by immersion immer-sion is essential to salvation. But it may be the similarities simi-larities more than the differences dif-ferences that create the most tension. Both are strong believers in their doctrine and tend to guard that doctrine very closely. Johnson, a former Mormon Mor-mon himself, believes both sides can not only get along, but learn from and strengthen each other in the process. While working on his master's of divinity at Denver Theological Seminary, Sem-inary, he was intrigued by what was happening in the world of Christianity interfacing inter-facing with Mormonism. "I thought I would love to help do something in that area," he said. Having left Mormonism at age 14, he hoped he could serve a kind of ambassador's role between Evangelical Christians Chris-tians and Mormons. It was with that goal in mind that he founded Standing Together Ministries, Min-istries, two years ago. Standing Together's mission mis-sion is to unite the Christian Christ-ian community in Utah. "OK, we believe different things. But we are never going to have a significant opportunity to share or learn or understand one another until we have some kind of relationship," Johnson John-son said. And that, he argues, can only happen when both sides are willing to set aside their own agendas. agen-das. "You shouldn't lose interest inter-est in someone just because they're not a good potential convert," he said. "I believe that we're called as Christians Chris-tians to love people no matter mat-ter what they believe. We love people who don't believe at all and we love people who believe differently differ-ently than we do. That's not to say we have to think everything they believe is wonderful or sacrifice our own beliefs." Now more than ever Evangelical Christians and Mormons need to work together to preserve the moral issues both hold sacred. "The society we live in is becoming very hostile to the values we possess," said Johnson. One way Standing Together is working to improve relations between Evangelical Christians and Mormons is by creating a model of positive dialogue. Johnson and Robert Millet, Mil-let, former dean of religion at Brigham Young University, Universi-ty, speak around the country coun-try in a lecture called "A Mormon and an Evangelical Evangeli-cal in Conversation." Together they . demonstrate demon-strate that Evangelical Christians and Mormons can disagree on doctrine but still talk and learn together. Standing Together also sponsors several conferences confer-ences on religious topics. The most recent, "Perspectives "Perspec-tives on American Religion," Reli-gion," was held last April. Designed to be noncon-frontational, noncon-frontational, the conference featured Mormon and Evangelical scholars. Johnson also works directly with LDS general authorities discussing things both sides can do to improve relations. General authorities have encouraged Mormons to stop using terms like nonmember that can contribute con-tribute to an exclusionist environment. "After all," Elder Ballard has said, "I don't consider myself a non-Baptist or a non-Catholic." They've also encouraged Mormons to let their children chil-dren play with kids from other faiths. Reverend Johnson is encouraging Evangelical Christians in Utah to be more proactive in involving themselves in the community. His goal is to have an Evangelical Christian float in next year's Freedom Festival parade. "These are small things," he said. "When you're in the majority you don't think about them, but when you're in the minority you think about them a lot." Johnson is seeing improvements. "I think things are really changing," he said. "And much for the better. We're not wanting to just battle the Mormons. We want to become a part of the community. com-munity. We want to have a better relationship with our Mormon friends." Grove Theatre to present 'Blood kiss' Things are about to get very ugly at The Grove Theatre this October. "Bloodkiss" is returning to the stage on Oct. 16 to 31. Tickets for this chilling production produc-tion are $7 per person and can be purchased by calling 796-TLXX or through high school Thespian clubs throughout Utah County or at the theatre on the day of the production. There will be pizza, nachos and other treats for an additional cost for those who plan on eating dinner. "Bloodkiss" is written by two local playwrights, play-wrights, Tyler Yates and Brenda Grant. "Bloodkiss" was first produced in Lehi in 1998 and was well attended, along with other Halloween shows after that. The Grove Theatre is excited to have "Bloodkiss," to capture a different audience. "We found an audience that keeps coming back year after year to see what we come up with next" said Grant, who also acts as director direc-tor of the production. The cast consists of Buddy Eyre, Wendy Dalton, Travis Yates, Meghan Wimmer, Rachel Skelton, Daryl Johnson, Shane Curran and Rebecca Ethington. Each night there will be a guest appearance by well known community commu-nity people, like Mr. UVSC Matt Easton, Lehi High School Principal Sheldon Worthington, drama teachers, Jan Shelton, Agnes Broberg and Stewart Shelley. Just like in a horror movie, guest performers always get killed. For the participants it will be their worst nightmare night-mare but for the students that know and lovehate them it will be their dream. The Grove Theatre is located at 20 S. Main in Pleasant Grove. The production may be too intense for young children. A New Indispensable Internet Tool For Your Business! I The Utah 1-cr.iI Notice Dnt.ih.-tsf is oiiKiK'I Manual soarohrs at (red Or mihwriJwln M.
