Show By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent When the American Fork Cavemen climbed aboard their baseball bus at Timpview April 16, they cheered spontaneously. They had every reason to celebrate. Their 15-6 win over the Timpview Thunderbirds was their first region triumph tri-umph of the season, and they gave top-ranked Pleasant Giwe a scare on Wednesday, even though they eventually lost 5-7. In the two teams' last meeting, the Thunderbirds had 10-runned American Fork. However, the Thunderbirds learned to their shock that American Fork had improved somewhat some-what since the last game. "We swung the bats well," said Caveman coach Ben Bird. "We put the pressure pres-sure on their defense the whole game. That is what we're going to have to do to win games." As soon as American Fork loaded the bases on two outs in the top of the first, pitcher pitch-er Chase Thayer walked Ryan Callahan, bringing B.J. Gardner home. Second baseman Ray Smithson picked off a Cody Mills pop fly, averting a possible pos-sible long Caveman rally. The Cavemen's first lead vanished in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Robby Hamblin singled in two runs. During the next two innings, Caveman pitcher Mills held the Thunderbirds scoreless. This empowered the Cavemen to tip the momentum their way. Doubling on one out in the second, Caveman Cam Schneider scored a tying run on a Thayer error. The next inning, Mills doubled in Ryan Mills and Callahan. In the fourth, a Russ By Dean Von Memmott In Region Six girls' soft- ball last week, American Fork dropped two games. At home April 17, they dropped a 5-1 decision to the visiting Timpview Thunderbirds. April 18 saw American Fork get shut out 9-0 at Spanish Fork. ' Of the Timpview game, American Fork coach Curtis Craig said, "Janae Bagley pitched a good game. Julie Paxman, our shortstop, kept us in the game with her defensive plays. Breeann Barron played third base well, even though she had not played that spot before. Defensively, we played great. While Cody Mills kept the Thunderbirds from catching up during the next two innings, the Cavemen slowly pulled away. In the fifth, Callahan stole home, triggering a four-run rally, and the sixth saw Cam Hudson's one-run single put the score at 9-3. Spurred on by a Schneider double in the sev-. sev-. enth, Gardner hit a one-run single to launch a decisive rally for American Fork. Doubles from Andy Payne and Cody Mills fueled a six-run six-run attack that stretched the lead to 15-3. The Thunderbirds hoped that Smithscn's three-run homer would revive their cause during the bottom of the seventh. However, Cody Mills struck out Frame to end the game. Wednesday, after holding American Fork scoreless in the top of the first, Pleasant Grove took a 2-0 lead on a Phil Rogers single and a Seth Iorg sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. Doubling in the second, Andy Payne soon came home on a Callahan single. American Fork loaded the bases on two outs near the end of the inning's upper half, but the next batter struck out. Over the next five innings, the Vikings constructed con-structed a 7-1 lead on key hits like doubles from Seth Morris and Seth Iorg. In the seventh, Hudson slugged a one-run single that launched a big rally for the Cavemen. The attack climaxed with Ryan Mills doubling in three runners to cut the lead to 7-5, but that was as close as it got. We let them rule the pace in the second half." The Lions took a 3-1 lead in the first half, with Brian Voglesberg getting the score for the Cavemen. Late in the game, Dustin Derrick scored the second batter after another, American Fork couldn't get anymore runs. In the meantime, the score stayed at 3-1 until Timpview scored two runs in the sixth. At top-ranked Spanish Fork, dominating pitcher Kristy Miller held American Fork to one hit.
