The American Fork wrestling team had two members place of the 'six who qualified for last week's state tournament at UVSC, and both will be returning next year. Junior Evan Ault finished fin-ished sixth at 160, while junior Nick Jensen was sixth in the heavyweight class. "For what we brought, we did great said coach Tim Pontious. Johnson was pinned late in the third round. L In the first consolation ound, Johnson faced a familiar foe in Brandon 01sen (17-6) of Spanish Fork, who finished fifth in he region. He drew another Region 6 opponent in the next round, Colt Carson (21-8) of Pleasant Grove, who came on in the latter part of the season and finished second at region. He eliminated Johnson with an 8-3 decision. deci-sion. Junior Chris Brinkerhoff was the sixth-place finisher at region and was one of American Fork's pleasant surprises, earning a state berth at 152. He was eliminated elimi-nated in two matches but will return with tournament tourna-ment experience next season. sea-son. Senior J.L. Kitchen (20-13) (20-13) also was in a challenging challeng-ing weight class at 171 this year and finished fifth at region. He drew Nate Hansen (19-5) of Sky View in the first round. Hansen was first in Region 4 and finished fourth at state last year. Kitchen went the distance dis-tance in the match but was defeated by major decision 19-10. In the first consolation consola-tion round, he faced Braydn Jones (19-19) of Lone Peak, who finished fourth at region. The first period went down as a 0-0 draw, but Kitchen took control 6-3 in the second period and won the match with a strong 11-4 11-4 performance. His next opponent was Mike Rutledge (22-12) of Mountain Crest, the fifth-place fifth-place finisher from Region 4. Kitchen had a close match with him, but prevailed pre-vailed 6-4. His final bout was with Eryan Murdock (19-3) of Fremont, who was second in tough Region 4. Kitchen stayed with him all the way but was eliminated just short of the medal round by an 8-5 decision. Sophomore James Miller was American Fork's other bonus entrant in the 215 weight class. He finished fifth at region and was also eliminated in two rounds but has two more seasons to represent the Cavemen. Ault (22-15) came in as the second seed after region and was matched in the first state round against Zack Sanders (15-7) of Fremont, who was fourth in Region 4. Ault won by third-period third-period fall at 4:53. His second opponent was Spencer Marchant (27-4) of Olympus, the second seed from Region 5. He pinned Ault in the first round. Next up was Craig Broadbent (21-11) of Payson, the fourth seed from Region 6. Jensen (26-8) won the region title over a number of others with more experience, experi-ence, and showed well for the Cavemen in the state tournament. He defeated Tyler Ulrich (12-13) of Murray with a pin at 3:54 in the first round, then edged Shawn Oram (28-7) of Fremont by a 3-2 decision. His next opponent was the formidable Emosi Fiefia (33-1), the defending state champion and first-place finisher in Region 4. Jensen stood his ground with him throughout the match and lost to him only by a single point at 5-8. The next bout against top Region 5 finisher Joe Child (30-8) of Bountiful was just as close, but Child ended up prevailing 3-1 in part because Jensen suffered a knee injury partway through the bout. Jensen was defeated by decision in the final match to determine his order of finish. "I'm very proud of his effort," Pontious said. "His knee was bothering him but he still came back and wrestled. wres-tled.
