Changes will have a major impact on students, teachers and parents Local coaches and administrators struggle to find a way to preserve rivalries and fairness By Beky Beaton When asked, all of the local school administrators and coaches echo the same basic concerns about realignment. They want to preserve their natural rivalries and keep the regions as geographically geo-graphically close as practical, thus minimizing mini-mizing the travel costs and out of class time of their students. Their take as individuals on the present proposals varies widely, however. Pleasant Grove principal Eris Waymire calls Proposal 2's divided Region 7 "not acceptable to us. The divisions won't be large enough to be viable regions on their own, and I don't know how we'd determine the crossover games and playoff berths." She indicated that Utah Valley administrators admin-istrators have been meeting with those from Uintah and Tooele to "try and pound out something that will work. ' The proposals on the table are just that. Our aim is to have the regions realign in such a way as to have students spend as little time out of class and on the bus as possible." At Lone Peak, principal James Starr is emphatic about not wanting to be forced into 5A. "We want to stay 4A," he said. "Now that our enrollments have been closed, we aren't going to grow like we thought. ' ' "I'd like to see a nice Utah County league, including Timpanogos, American Fork and Lehi. Only in football does the size difference matter. If we go to the four classifications with the football exception, I could live with that." Principal Glen Clark sees it a bit differently. differ-ently. He made a formal request to the Alpine School District Board to have boundaries adjusted with Lone Peak to even out enrollments. The Board decided not to do that, but responded by closing Lone Peak to, in effect, even things out a bit, according to secondary superintendent Vera Hens haw. What weW Irvine to drfiflr 1 keep a balance in staff and programs. The Board felt closing Lone Peak was a step to stabilize the situation without forcing an unnatural transition of students." Given that decision, Clark said "the best thing for AFHS is to play in the 3A region that's going to be as close to us geographically geo-graphically as possible. "We're definitely going to lose our historical his-torical rivalries, but to continue to play in 4A with schools half again as large isn't fair to our students," he concluded. Principal Sheldon Worthington at Lehi High School feels the same way. "We oppose all-county regions," he said. "We can't maintain programs if we get beat up all the time. The enrollment discrepancies are just too great. "We think having American Fork and Lehi in the same classification will benefit both schools. It restores an old rivalry, helps with travel, and keeps some parity in the ranks," he said. He prefers his own proposal for four 3A regions, maintaining it cuts down on travel trav-el and maintains the good, traditional arrangement for tournament pairings. One of the areas of disagreement is how to view enrollments. "We know that things can change very quickly, but projections are difficult to use since the factors vary so widely" said Evan Excell, UHSAA executive execu-tive director. As far as the travel complaints go, Excell said, "The Board has a responsibility responsibili-ty to protect the outlying schools.- They have to have schedules too. We hope schools will be willing to compromise a bit on travel and time out of class for the benefit ben-efit of all institutions." Excell said the Board will base their final decision on enrollment, geography and rivalries, in that order. The ruling will affect not only athletics, but music, drama, debate and other sanctioned activities. Proposals on the table all have pluses, minuses and adherents Source: Utah Wgr School ActMttetAssa The input phase of realignment means that anyone can make a proposal that he or she thinks makes some sense. Presented above are the five possibilities making the rounds in our area. While it is unlikely that any of them will be adopted as is, they do provide a useful springboard for discussion as they are all attempts to deal with issues raised by the realignment process. Proposal 1 is what the regions would look like if the enrollment groupings currently cur-rently in use were applied. The number of schools in each region looks reasonable for the 5A and 3A classifications, classifi-cations, but creates two regions of 10 schools in the 4A ranks. , That's too many to play each region member every year in football, or to play twice in the other team sports. It would also make these schools undarrepresented in the playoffs. In addition, the proposed Region 8 would require a huge increase in travel time and costs for those schools. This plan also isolates Timpanogos, leaving them to travel and play only Salt Lake schools when they are surrounded by others much closer. Proposal 8 is the one that represents the UHSAA Board's first stab at a proposal. propos-al. It makes for the nice, even regions and plentiful playoff berths favored by the arge 5A schools, though Timpanogos remains isolated. For local principals, the divided Region 7 is a problem as it would not allow, again, for each school to play their normal num-ber num-ber of games against all region opponents. As with the first proposal, it also raises questions about playoff berths from that region and how seeding would be accomplished. accom-plished. This alignment still leaves disproportionate dispropor-tionate travel to the schools in Region 8 and 9, which many of their principals deem unacceptable. Proposal S would return Utah to the four classification system favored by some. At the 4A and 3A level, this plan has the advantage of creating eight regions with eight teams each, resolving one of. the inequities in other plans. However, this would force reduced participation par-ticipation in playoffs across the board and, in tile case of 3A, have some schools competing com-peting with others twice as large. Those in favor of this version say that wouldn't be an intolerable situation except in football, where sixe differences among schools are magnified. Accordingly, a sidebar to this proposal is the suggestion of a different alignment for the football playoffs only, allowing for more equityin enrollments and more participation. participa-tion. These divisions do preserve many of the traditional rivalries disrupted in the other proposals, but don't allow for any adjustments in other sports and activities. Two local principals have made their own proposals to try and address issues of concern to them. The proposal from Pleasant Grove aims to keep American a Fork with its traditional rivals and create a" Utah County league. This plan places the largest valley schools by their reckoning, Timpanogos, Lone Peak and Spanish Fork, in 5A together, togeth-er, which cuts down travel and isolation. It keeps the other valley schools together togeth-er with the addition of Uintah, which is already 4A in numbers but has been kept in 3A because of geographic isolation. The proposal from Lehi High School keeps many aspects of the preferred UHSAA plan but makes four regions for 3A that are grouped closer geographically. This proposal is the best choice for Lehi ; and American Fork, according to their principals, prin-cipals, because it keeps necessary travel to a minimum and enrollment groups more even and fair for competitive purposes.
