Show I i km Chimney Sv Kirk Magleby has a habit of tipping his top bat and saying, "Good Luck." He says it's one of the most important parts of his profession. His hat is tipped a lot when he's on the roof, looking up a fireplace or dusting out a flue. Kirk is a chimney sweep so all that tipping is just part of the job. "I think there are probably 1,000 chimney sweeps in the United States, and Utah has about eight of them," Kirk said. "After a 50-year 50-year break, chimney sweeps are starting to comeback." Although Kirk says he doesn't intend to sweep out chimneys the rest of his life, he's sure having one heck of a time doing his work now. "I sure love it," Kirk says with his broad chimney sweep smile. "I don't think my family is real excited about it, but I love it and that's what counts the most." Kirk got started in the sweeping business after be moved to Boston. His son had a defect in his legs that could only be corrected by treatment in Boston. "My wife Shannon and I took him back there and I worked odd jobs to support us and just ended up working with a chimney sweep," he recalled. "Back there the business is reaUy big and there is good money in it" After his son Rock's treatment, the Maglebys moved back to their home town, American Fork. Kirk said he had purchased his own sweeping equipment so be decided to enroll at BYU and work part time as a chimney sweep. "Although I dress up and really enjoy all the publicity involved, I am into this for economic reason," he explained. "But tkings areo'i.half as good back here as they are in the east." Either the rear wheels lose traction and the car starts to swap ends, or the front end slides away form the direction and course being steered. A skid can be terrifying and is often dangerous. The best thing to remember and the number one defense is never to get into one. Skids contribute to one fourth of all serious accidnets and are almost always the result of driver error. "Back in Europe the sweeps were considered the lowest class of people," Kirk says. 'They always dressed up in high fashion, but that was because they got their clothes from the undertakers. He said years ago sweeps were small because they actually climbed into the chimney to get out the soot and dirt that had built up inside the fireplaces. "The first detection of cancer came from the chimney sweeps," he added. "I have to be careful and wear masks and other equipment because if that soot gets on your skin or in your lungs, you can have lots of trouble." Up until 50 years ago when chimney sweeps all but disappeared from the United States, Kirk says all the sweeps here were black. "Because it was considered such a dirty and poor job, slaves were imported from the south to be sweeps," he said. "Then, when the use of wood burning stoves declined, so did the sweeps." Now, the new fad for wood and coal burning stoves has resulted in the return of chimney sweeps such as Kirk. He said his job is a necessary one, and most people don't realize how important it is to get the chimney cleaned. "There are so many fires because of clogged chimneys and flues," Kirk explained. "People just don't know that they need to keep their fireplaces clean or the danger of a fire is really high." , He recommends that fireplaces be cleaned every 2-5 years. Wood-stoves, Wood-stoves, according to Kirk, should be cleaned every year. Once Kirk convinces someone that their fireplace does need to be cleaned, the real work begins. "First I get up on the roof," he said. "I always wear the top hat up there because the people really love it." Kirk then uses one of his big wire brushes to get the soot and grime out of the chimney. He has large poles that push the brushes down low into the chimney. "After that, I get inside the fireplace and clean and remove the damper," Kirk related. "With the damper removed I can get inside and brush out the smoke chamber, which is the area just above the firebox." He uses a huge vacuum cleaner, tarps and other cleaning equipment and promises that no dirt will get on anyone's carpeting. car-peting. "The entire process takes about two hours at the most," Kirk said. "I really do get filthy, just like all of the chimney sweep pictures, but that's all part of the job. All that climbing and jabbing and sweeping will cost you 35. Kirk thinks that's a bargain because chimney sweeps all over the country get lots more money for doing the same thing. Kirk does admit that a large part of his job is pure showmanship. "Oh, the older people who remember chimney sweeps from when they were little and the kids think it's just great to see me walking down the street with my top hat and bow tie," said Kirk. "Besides that, it's good for business when someone sees me up there and, of course, I always wave and smile." When Kirk finishes school in April, he will be moving to Texas to work on a Masters degree. He said he expects to clean chimneys there also. Then he wants to return to the east and get his doctorate in anthropology an-thropology so he can do research on the Book Of Mormon, and no doubt clean chimneys on the side. "Back east we were all kind of like a big fraternity," explained Kirk. "You get kind of hooked on it."
