Show avemon The American Fork Cavemen downed Judge Memorial Friday night at the local high school 79-64. The following evening the American Fork team traveled to Clearfield where the Falcons rallied in the final stages to post a 63-58 63-58 win. The split of the weekend gives Am. Fork a record of two wins against one defeat in the young season. In the Friday night encounter, it was like two separate games. In the first half it was a comedy of errors on both sides. The score was tied 29-all at the half. Elder Beck scored 16 points and was most of the offense of-fense but as has been the case in early games he was in foul trouble early. Steve Larsen led the Cavemen turn-a-round in the second half. After antam The 1978-79 season of Bantam Basketball got off to a great start last Saturday at the National Guard Armory. The sixteen teams in the league put on a fine full day of basketball for the spectators. The first game pitted the Stars and the Colts; and the Stars, led by John Stephens and Dan Scoursby, eeked out a 44 to 41 victory. The Colts were led by Brian Strong and Kevin Manning. It was a close, hard fought game that set the tone for other close games that day. The Kings, with their new coach Dennis Neal, found things very tough against the Knicks. The Hawks also have a new coach in Bob Eccles, who replaces Wayne Binch, a man that has given more than twenty years to this program and was a great credit to it. Wayne was a perfect gentleman and a great coach. I'm sure Bob will do a fine job and we wish him well. His team was led by Dave Holland's spectacular 32-point effort. But the Bee's Matt Cottrell scored 14 and the game was close and very hard fought with the Hawks finally coming out on top 36 to 31. In the third game of the day, the Bulls spotted the Jets a big first half lead the emphasis on fun." A meeting to organize the league will be held at City Hall on December 12 at 7:00. Costs for the league will be minimal at less than $25 per team to cover a few balls, scorebooks and trophies. All interested persons are urged to attend. The Wendell Hansen-coached Hansen-coached Pistons again look like the team to beat. They aren't very tall, but handle and shoot the ball extremely well. Wendell's Wen-dell's sons Troy and Travis, along with Lance Gleave, give them a quick agressive team and they showed they mean business again with an easy 45 to 19 victory over the rebuilding Mets. The Alps and Celtics battled next in a hard fought game that featured good defense on both sides that accounted for the difficulty these two fine teams had in putting the ball through the basket. Mike Davis scored 12 points to lead the victorious Alps to a 32 to 25 victory. Troy Birk scored 12 for the losers. The Lions and Rams hooked-up next in a dandy. Am. Fork jumped out to a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, extended it to 46-24 half time and never looked back. The offense was led by Roger Brady's 26 points including a spectacular shot that deflected off his hands and banked in. Bruce Hansen and Clark out with a one point victory on Gurney's last-second last-second shot. Two of the strongest teams in the league battled the final game of the day. The tall Utahn's against the quick Cadets. The Cadets, led by Alan Carter's 15 points and Rob Rockefeller's 14 points, held a four-point lead with just two minutes to play, but mistakes and a technical foul proved their undoing and Quinn Deveraux scored a late basket to win the game. John Pollitt was the leading scorer in the game with 18 points for the winners. The final score 44 to 41 for the Utahns. "Three leagues have been formed," for-med," said Steve Bailey, American Fork Recreation Director. "One for 3rd and 4th grades, another for 5th and 6th and a third for Jr. High age kids." About 120 grade school Burgess added 13 points each and Kenny Turner another 12. Hansen's rebounding and Burgess' swarming defense were highlights of the game. All this along with, of course, Brady's great offense. Four fine sophs, Don Smith, Clint Devitt, Jay Holmstead and Reed Murdock, played good ball. Saturday night at Clearfield, the Cavemen and Falcon's waged a close, hard fought battle for the first three quarters with the Cavemen holding a slim 49-46 lead. In the final period, however, the Clearfield press forced the Cavemen to make numerous errors and the Falcons came from behind to score a 63-59 victory. Elder Beck scored 25 points to lead the Cavemen attack but he again got into foul trouble and fouled out in the final period. Gary is a great player but in the first three games his playing time has been limited because of fouls. Here's hoping he learns to control this problem because the Cavemen are going to need him in the games ahead. r Remember there is a mid-week league game at Timpview next Wednesday night and a Booster Club "Meet the Team" tonight at 7:30 p. m . in the high school .
