Show "31 n 80 if rly iore I fulberable edesirian Ac cicients The lot of the pedestrian in America's vehicle oriented society has never been an easy one. And if you're a "Senior citizen" pedestrian, your chances of surviving a walk on the nation's streets are considerably consi-derably less than those of the average person, according to the National Safety Council. In 1975, the last year for which complete Safety Council statistics are available, there were 8,600 pedestrian fatalities and about 110,000 injuries. While persons over 65 comprise com-prise only about 11 percent of the total population, they accounted ac-counted for nearly one-fourth of these pedestrian deaths and injuries. "It's a sad situation," said Leo H. Barlow, President Elect of the Utah Safety Council, Coun-cil, "When you consider that walking is one of the favorite and best forms of exercise available to our elderly." "Of course," Barlow continued, contin-ued, "the elderly themselves can improve the situation by taking greater safety precautions, precau-tions, obeying all pedestrian rules and by taking their constitutions con-stitutions in parks and their shopping tours at low or non-traffic non-traffic times when possible. Barlow warned that the problem of the elderly pedestrian pedes-trian will not be an easy one to solve. "It will take more driver and pedestrian education, educa-tion, greater enforcement of traffic laws, and the concern of all our citizens," he said. If interested inter-ested please call 758-3777. $fc:::S:::::::: (Camera iHagtc Barlow also pointed out thai traffic engineering improvements improve-ments are widely needed to enhance pedestrian safety. He said the construction of such things as safety islands, subways sub-ways and elevated crossings for pedestrians, pedestrian traffic signals, marked crosswalks, cross-walks, sidewalks, better street lighting and more pedestrian shopping malls would do much to eliminate some of the worst pedestrian hazards. "Besides." Barlow concluded, conclud-ed, "with our ever dwindling supplies of fuel, it's time that elderly and all other pedestrians pedes-trians were given more consideration consi-deration as a necessary part of transportation planning." Arts Fair Winners Sweepstakes winners at the American Fork High School for competition conducted during dur-ing the recent PTA sponsored Cultural Arts fair Judges of the meet were from the Utah Technical College Col-lege according to Sylvia Col-ton, Col-ton, counselor at the school. Winners were Philb.-n Poseyesva, arts and era ,ts; Julie Larsen, commercial art; Hank Nelson, fine art; Cynthia Glines, literature; Jon Hall, music composition; Newell Kitchen, photography; Kathy Hall, sewing; Sheila Merkley, refinishing wood, and Randy Hoyt, wood. In the meantime, the Safety Council offers pedestrians, especially the elderly, the following fol-lowing suggestions to help safeguard life and limb when on foot on the nation's streets and roads: 1. Don't jaywalk! Walk only with the signal light or at the direction of a traffic officer. Before leaving the curb, be sure that the way is clear; stop and look both ways and watch for turning cars. Walk brisk, and be alert for cars .1 ill- - by Kay Mitani A good recipe for a repotting mix for indoor house plants is one part sterilized soil, one part peatmoss and one part coarse sand. When to repot? When you notice your plants wilting after watering, soil drying out quickly, roots appearing on the soil serface, lower leaves turning yellow or leaf size decreasing in growth. Begin by knocking the plant out of the pot. A solid mass of roots with little soild means your timing is right. Choose a pot about 2" wider and deeper than the old one. It is better to underpot than overpot. Use a layer of broken pot parts as pebbles at the bottom for drainage. You will wonder why you waited so long as you watch your plant flourish in its new home. If you don't have any hanging plants in your home right now, may we suggest to you that you come on down to K's FLORAL, 1090 East State Road, American Fork, 75-7903 75-7903 and choose from our fabulous selection of hanging baskets. You will notice I great deal of warmth added U any room in your house at soon as you add plants. Stof by soon and take some hom with you. Be especially careful care-ful of your footing if the pavement pave-ment is slippery or uneven. Walk directly across; do not pause in the middle of the street. 2. If you carry an umbrella, do so in such a way as to have a clear view; keep alert and be aware of traffic. 3. Wait for buses on the curb or in the safety zone. When you must walk through traffic to get to the safety island, move cautiously, 4. When descending from a bus in midstreet, walk in the safety zone to the crosswalk and then directly to the curb. If crossing to the opposite side of the street, wait until the vehicle has moved on. Never dash behind or in front of it and risk being caught in the flow of traffic. 5. Always stand on the curb, not in the street, while waiting to cross. 6. When walking along a road where there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side facing oncoming traffic. 7. At night wear or carry something white, light in color or reflective, or carry a light, so that motorists' attention wili be attracted to you. 8. Make use of subways or elevated crossings, safety islands is-lands and other provided safeguards safe-guards 9. Be self-reliant and confident, confi-dent, not hesitant, if you are within your rights and are observing ob-serving safety laws. At the same time, do not be foolhardy foolh-ardy and try to buck the motorist even if you are right and he is w rong. 10. Be just as alert and careful care-ful when walking in a group as when alone, and do not depend on others to watch out for your safety.
