Show CITIZEN SPQB1S BY JCt! RCwESTS Sprinpille law Cavemen Springville's Red Devils held off a late rally by the American Fork Cavemen to win the league opener between the two schools 58-62. Jon Varney made 24 points and Craig Pabst of Springville made 26 to put on great shooting exhibitions ex-hibitions for the fans, but Pabst got aid from his team mates in the form of rebounds to make the difference. Springville a pre-seasoo favorite fav-orite along with Spanish Fork led most of the way from between be-tween 4 to9points,but A.F. would cash in on a goal or two and keep the outcome in doubt down to Cavoiiion to Hat PL Drove Vikings Friday Tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. A.F. goes on the road once more playing the well balanced PL Grove Vikings. The Vikings with an easy win over the Uintah Utes by a 73-40 final score, have a very balanced team. Their height is nearly the same as the Cavemen's. Tom Hamann, Chris Bean, Russ Eyre, Colby Adamson and Wayne Allred are the Viking starters, and P.G. coach Allred has the Vikings in a disciplined offense with lots of screens and picks, as all five P.G. starters shoot pretty well Judge Memorial defeated P.G. 77 to 83 with Judge using apress, but for the most part the Vikings were not bothered very much. It was not a zone press such as A.F. uses but the P.G. team handles it better than average. A.F. has more back court speed in Holm stead and Varney, which will help a lot, and up front the lines look about even, with A.F. holding a weight advantage that should help on the rebounds. I look for a very even ball game with the team that wants the win the most coming out on top. Spanish Fork turned back the Payson Lions 62-52, Carbon upset up-set Lehl 66-58 in other League games last week. Spanish Fork at Carbon, Lehi at Springville, Uintah at Payson completes this week round. A.F. played at Orem and got off to a horrible start losing 76-42 in a Saturday contest. Orem with a decided advantage led 5-4 but then ran off 24 straight points before A.F. hit another goal and led then at 29-6. After that it was only a question of what the final would be. Judge was here in town early in the week for the final preseason pre-season game. the last minute. Quarter scores were 15-15, 31-26, 45-42, with the Red Devils in front, as A.F. missed many real good shots. In the filial quarter a few mental mistakes cost the Cavemen dearly. Jon Varney played an outstanding outstand-ing ball game for A.F., his shooting, shoot-ing, hustle and leadership are great assets to the team. Kurt Holmstead his backcourt partner part-ner had 12 and they gave the Devils many problems in pressing all over the court. Jim Dean hit 9 points, Barry Durrant had 7 and MaxStrasburg 6, but the height of Springville's Pabst and Mike Hansen were big hurdles on the boards of A.F. A.F. Cavemen Wrestlers Defeat South Sevier; To Meet Lehi Coach Don Mower's American Fork Cavemen wrestling squad defeated South Sevier in a dual peet last week as the wrestlers prepare for the league matches that start today, with A.F. going over to do battle with the Lehi Pioneers. David Anderson 98 pounder got A.F. started right with a 3rd period pin against the Monroe team last time out. At 105 Tony Puenta won a 10-1 decision for A.F. Mark Reimschiissel earned a 6-6 tie for two team points that proved to be the margin as the A.F. team won by a 29-27 final score. Mark Walker won a 5-0 decision de-cision at 126 pounds. At 155 Steve Rushton doubled the score on his opponent for a 8-4 win. Paul Sagers won a third period match with a pin and big points for A.F.- At 185 Hy Lee Evans gained a second period pin for the margin of points needed. For Sagers and Evans the wins were especially impressive as they won matches over wrestlers who have not lost a dual meet bout in three years. Coach Mower is being assisted as-sisted by Roy Pehrson and Dick Hill, and the coaches are putting I Christmas itW I Greetings tOe welcome this opportunity v-tn to thank all our customers jA l for their fine support. I 'rs Sophs Lose First Game To Provo American Fork's sophmore basketball team lost their first game of the year Monday as the Provo sophmores edged the Cavemen team 52-51 with a last second one and one for A.F. failing for the difference. Coach Art Allred has several talented sophs that have racked up wins over this same Provo team and the sophs also have victories over Springville and Orem to date. Coach Allred has started Kerry Ker-ry Webster and Max Murdock on the wings, Randy Rhodes in the post and Wayne Short and Ryan Smith on the guard line. This team has progressedprettygood, and they are all better than average aver-age shooters with Rhodes and Smith the tallest and shortest on the squad. Rhodes goes a-bout a-bout 6' 4" while Smith stretches all out to about 5' 4", and the others fall in between. All sophmore games will start at 4 p.m. on Thursday's.
