E&elion in ll's Ifctad Environment Using the American ForkCan yon, Mill Hollow on the Upper Provo River and Ephriam Canyon Can-yon as his laboratories, Utah State professor Carl Johnson has exposed scores of Utah elemen tary school instructors to a knowledge of the delicate natural mechanism that sustains human life. "It's terrible how education in awareness of natural values has been neglected in the past," says Johnson. "Although outdoor education-conservation education-direct education-direct ly relates to whether man will survive at all on this planet, plan-et, it has been mostly ignored in favor of dry, classroom subjects that are now finally being seen as less important than the quality qual-ity of the environment." Through the teachers and fu ture teachers uf Utah, Prof. Johnson John-son and colleagues have been attempting at-tempting to redress this imbalance. imbal-ance. Besides introducing a regular reg-ular course entitled Principles of Conservation to the Utah State curriculum, Prof. Johnson this summer has begun this series of entirely outdoor courses. . First, we teach simple environmental en-vironmental awareness to make people conscious of the natural world around them," says Prof. Johnson, a solid blond ex -Marine who conveys great enthusiasm. "It's amazing how their eyes open as they begin to see. We try to stress the interdependence of things. And we put man right in the middle of it. We stress his dependence de-pendence on undisturbed natural processes. For example, we'd begin on the flood plain at the mouth of American Fprk Canyon and work all the way up to Mount Timpanogos, beginning at 6:30 each morning and studying for five hours straight how It's all linked together. What impressed the classes most was now we could go out and study one canyon really hard for three weeks, learning interesting things all the time, and at the same time how happy and pleasant the whole project pro-ject was for all of us. "Undoubtedly, the subject matter mat-ter Is naturally appealing. Yet you'd be amazed how many people peo-ple couldn't care less. As long as water comes out of a faucet and air is clean enough to breathe, that's all they want. Of course when that doesn't happen, then thpy get really interested. . "Our teachers went away just awed. I'm sure their excitement will get into the classroom. And in teaching outdoor education you don't substitute it for other subjects sub-jects you just Involve the child's environment in what he is studying. study-ing. Children are instinctively fascinated by this, which makes it easy to weave in all kinds of other education. For language arts, you have them write about what they've seen for math, you have them calculate acres and percentages. They get so interested inter-ested they don't want to stop. "I would hope that soon every school district In Utah would nave well-planned environmental ed ucation Involving the community and its leaders. The outcome would be a more esthetic en vironment less littering and vandalism, lesi pollution of air and water. That's He real objective quality qual-ity livintr. But believe me, the en vironment is going to get worse and worse if people don't learn to support these programs. Really, Real-ly, the planet Earth is nothing but one little spaceship in the vast universe. We're nothing different from the men we've sent to the moon. They had to make careful care-ful use of strictly limited air and water. They had to recycle everything every-thing they used. So do we. We have to be self-sustaining. We can't take something out of the earth without putting something back in to replace it." Jim Lawrence, now superintendent superin-tendent of the Granite school district, dis-trict, has a saying that sums it up. Johnson loves to quote it: "There was a time when teachers teach-ers had the mission of teaching the human race to be literate. Teachers now must teach a literate lit-erate race to be human." That's the problem, Johnson says. "To teach this literate race to be human, to live in harmony with the only environment environ-ment they'll ever have." "I figure you'll work for about a year after we're married. Then I'll get a job."
