Pro. duction in 1957 totaled 25,400,000 barrels or 69,600 barrels per day, an increase of 7 per cent over 1956. Increased production resulted from expanding waterflood operations, op-erations, new development, and a strong demand during the first quarter. Production leveled off later in the year as a result of refinery strikes and cutbacks In state producing allowables. The net income for 1957 total ed $18,900,000 compared to 1956 net income of $14,400,000. The Improvement in earnings over the previous year was due prin cipally to increased oil produc tion and a higher crude price structure. The greater earnings were made despite depressed product prices throughout most of the year which resulted in Carter's combined manufactur ing-marketing profit amounting to less than y2c per gallon on products sold. According to the Report, the company continued on aggres sive exploratory program during the past year with particular emphasis in the Rocky Mountain area. Of special significance was a discovery of major proportions at McElmo Creek in the Paradox LBasin area of southern Utah. In addition to drilling 44 wildcat wells the company contributed toward the drilling of more than 300 additional exploratory wells which helped evaluate Carter acreage. Expansion of Carter's Billings, Montana refinery was initiated to Increase crude capacity from 25,000 barrels daily to 34,000 barrels bar-rels dally. The enlarged capacity capa-city of the refinery will support Carter's expanding marketing effort in a 10-state area in the northern and western part of the country. During the past year gasoline sales increased 12 over 1956. The company's 1957 marketing program was highlighted by entry en-try into the Seattle-Portland area, where 30 new Carter Serv- RRIftUTFN YOUR ram mw -mm m -m, UUILUUK Willi $25 to $2 Springtime will be a happy time when you use extra cash to stay ahead of all expenses.
