' Cancer Fund Drive Set , For April The month of April has been ;et apart by the American Cancer Can-cer Society for the conducting of their annual drive for contributions. con-tributions. Heber Grant Ivins, Chairman of the drive in North Utah County, states that the people of this area 'should be aware that they are receiving considerable benefits from the contributions made in this particular par-ticular drive. It is reported by Mr. Ivins that this drive, was conducted in 1957 with a reported report-ed .administrative cost of 3.8 which is exceedingly small as compared to many other fund raising campaigns. Of the $10,365.00 raised in Utah County in 1957, approximately 257c will be returned to this area for direct assistance in the treatment of cancer patients. Mrs. Leo Meredith, the Service Director of the Cancer Society, recently reported that considerable consider-able assistance was given to local lo-cal citizens in 1957 and that she has never been refused by the Cancer Society when application for assistance has been made. In addition to the assistance for treatment Utah received, in 1957, $73,033.00 in research grants. Mr. Ivins felt that this was considerably in excess of their proportionate percentage from the national drive. It was also pointed out that the American Cancer Society has played an active role in obtaining obtain-ing favorable legislatlo'n for Federal Fed-eral appropriation of urgently needed health research facilities. In 1957 the Federal Government appropriated approximately 30 million dollars for such research and Utah received $1,526,157.00. It can readily be seen that Utah and its Universities -are among the leading recipients of funds for research purposes. Mr. ivins urged the general public to support this drive feeling feel-ing that through such voluntary contributions eventually - this dread disease will be successfully conquered as was the scourge of Polio through the Salk Vaccine.
