On that last day of tournament action, American Fork defeated the Pleasant Grove Vikings 12-10 for the right to challenge the Taylorsville Warriors for the state crown. Defending champion Taylorsville overpowered the Cavemen Cave-men 15-3 in a five-inning affair. American Fork's rematch with Pleasant Grove was delayed two days because of a Friday night rainstorm rain-storm that made the baseball diamond dia-mond at Ken Price unplayable. The Cavemen were quick to grab an early lead in the Pleasant Grove game. In the bottom of the first inning, Mike Burrows opened the game's scoring with a one-run double hit into center. An error by shortstop Nate Duvall let American Ameri-can Fork make another two runs that inning. In the second, Caveman Dave Studderthit a solohomer, and teammate team-mate Jarod Ingersoll homered Derek De-rek Allred, putting the lead at 6-0. Meanwhile, pitcher Burrows got really hot. During the second inning, in-ning, for example, he fanned three of four batters that the Vikings sent against him. Duringthe third, though, Mark Norman hit a three-run three-run homer off the chucker, cutting American Fork's lead to 6-3. In the bottom of the inning, Bartholemew answered that hit with a three-run homer of his own. In the fifth, two Caveman errors and a Wyatt Cloward single permitted per-mitted Pleasant Grove to pull within 9-6. Bartholomew came home on a wild pitch during the inning's bottom half. That run turned out to be a key one for the Cavemen, because of what hap Sophomore takes By DEAN VON MEMMOTT Although a sophomore, Cherish Hansen has been one of the most experienced players on the American Ameri-can Fork Cavewomen's varsity soft-ball soft-ball team this year. While growing up in Scotts Valley, Val-ley, Calif., she opened softball career ca-reer in sixth grade. She recalls dur-ingher dur-ingher first season she made an all-star all-star team. She went on to play for a competition level team called Scotts Valley Select. "It was made up not only of just girls in my town," Hansen recalls. "Most of the people on it came from towns two hours away. It had some of the best players in the Bay area." Scotts Valley Select didn't play in a league. The ballclub played in weekend tournaments. "We never took last in them," Hansen said. "We won many of them." The daughter of Mark and Janet Hansen, she says, "I have 15 or 16 championship trophies." It was during her says with Scotts Valley Select that she first played third base. Last summer, her family moved to American Fork. lill tutt 1 ' State Farm Sells Life Insurance. STATE FARM LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois Citizen Wednesday, May 26, pened in the sixth. During Inning 6, Burrows permitted per-mitted Pleasant Grove to load the bases on one out. The Vikings then scored three runs on a Ron Branin sacrifice fly and an American Fork error. Three straight one-out doubles hit by Tyler Manning, Brooks Houghton, and Studdert saved American Fork's hide, for those extra-base hits enabled the Cavemen to make two runs. With one out in the seventh, Mike Garrett singled in Damian Sapp, but the Caveman defense kept Pleasant Grove from getting closer than 12-10. The win over Pleasant Grove vaulted the Cavemen into playing for the state 4-A title for the first time in history. The championship game, however, was delayed for two hours when a power-outage shut down the ball park until after 10 p.m. when power was restored and the lights could be turned on. The game ended around midnight, mid-night, but for the Cavemen, it was basically over in the first inning. Although the Cavemen loaded the bases on singles from Allred, Burrows, and Ryan Bromley in the top of the first, they couldn't get any runs in. The game took a disastrous turn for them in the bottom of the inning. in-ning. A right-field double by Brad Parker opened an 11-run rally for Taylorsville. After that inning, the Cavemen battled hard to prolong the game as long as they could. A first-base sacrifice sac-rifice by Studdert in the second inning brought Manning home for the first Caveman run. Singling in the third, Ingersoll came home on a Lewis double, putting put-ting American Fork within 11-2. In the bottom of the inning, Parker hit a solo homer.
