If You Go To The Chiropractor, Do You Have To Keep Going Forever? A misconception that many people have is that once they have chiropractic care they will have to continue treatment forever. This misconception can best be answered by comparing chiropractic to dentistry. Once you go to a dentist, does that mean you will have to keep going? The answer is no, however, the consequences of not taking care of your teeth are obvious. Due to lack of 'Hie education, most people arc not aware of the effects of spinal neglect, .ur spine is under constant stress as long as you are in an upright position, whether it be standing or sitting. Every part of your body is directly or indirectly attached to your spine and is controlled by the nerves that come from the spine. Unlike your teeth, when your spine develops problems, it cannot be replaced and is at best difficult to repair. It would seem logical then, that it is important to take care of your spine by receiving corrective and maintenance care. When patients come into the office with a health problem, they arc treated in different phases depending on the nature of the problem. I'hase I is emergency care (the patient is in pain). Phase II is corrective care (the source of the problem is being corrected). Phase III is weaning from care and I'hase IV is maintenance care. Once we have corrected a patient's condition as much as possible, he is released from active care and placed on maintenance care. Emergency care is based on the severity of the condition and may require daily treatment for a week or two. Corrective care is two to three times per week. The weaning phase is once a week or once every two weeks. Maintenance care is based on the patient's age, past health history, diagnosis, etc. It ranges from once every three weeks to once every six months (for children). Based on how important your spine is and the fact that you have to live with it the rest of your life, it would seem logical that you should take care of it by receiving frequent maintenance adjustments.
