Alpine seeks volunteers Alpine city is looking for new members for their volunteer fire department, and volunteers for the Miss Alpine Committee. Councilwoman Barbara Williams, responsible for both areas, said at the recent fire at Timp Cave, only six of 20 firemen were able to respond re-spond to the fire. "It makes it very difficult to fight a fire with that many people," she said. Applicants would need to complete training programs. The Miss Alpine Committee is also getting underway for the year, and anyone interested in helpingon the committee should contact Williams. "We wish We!' a .i;'; our " art "And eer. tPoiiu'" v. ; s awa "From our thought -.;' . , vcr -tray." This verse, displayed or. a large poster of red and yellow heart at the post office in American Fork, pays tribute to two postal employees employ-ees from the local office who are among those called to serve in the Persian Gulf crisis. Trie display is flanked on either side with large yellow bows on which the names of Major Southard, serving serv-ing with the Marine Reserve, and 1st Sgt. Ostergard, with the National Na-tional Guard, are written. Both men are full-time regular postmen, said Ken Jorgensen, Postmaster. Jorgensen said it's going to be hard for a while with them gone because with eight city carriers, they represent one-fourth of the staff. "In a small office likes this - we only have 30 employees -- losing two makes a big impact," he said. "Because of our size we are just like a family here and we feel the leaving of the two employees just like they were a member of our family." Jorgensen said some of the carriers carri-ers are working overtime in order to get the mail delivered -- but in some areas, it may be later than usual. The post office is hoping to hire one substitute carrier with other carriers dividing the second route among themselves, "We will get the mail out as fast as we can, but hope the public will be patient," postal officials said.
