Tat contestants were anxious. The judges had a tough decision to make. - It was the first annual Girl Scout Bake-off for the Timpanagos Girl Scout Neighborhood and the average age of the pastry and bakery chef was eight. The top bakers included Daisy scout Melissa Snedecor from Troop 335, Brownie scout Shirley Larsen from Troop 868 and Junior scout Jennifer Hadlock from Troop 554. Melissa entered her "Never Fail Fudge." Shirley won with her Banana Pudding and Jennifer Hadlock's success came from the Lemon Sponge Pudding she whipped up. Held Feb. 15, in the American Fork City Public Safety Building, the Bake-off featured the best dessert recipes Brownies, Daisies and Junior Girl Scouts could find. All the girls had to prepare their own dessert items for the contest, without help from mother. (Daisies could have some "technical" assistance.) Troop leader for Daisy Troop 335, Kathy Denney says for a first time effort the Bake-off was a big success. suc-cess. Six troops from the area participated, each choosing the best two from their troop to compete in the District Bake-off. Alpine resident and cooking contest winner Melanie Zimmerman and District Field Advisor Kathy Mdssner judged the entrys. "We were very surprised at what kindergarteners could do," says Denney. "The whole idea was to encourage girls and their moms to work on cooking skills together and so many of the moms came to me and said they couldn't believe how fun it was."
