Show Citizen - Wednesday, February 26, 1986 Page 6 1 c 3 AF sweeps past Alta and Bingham By DEAN VON MEMMOTT The American Fork Cavemen won two games last week to get themselves them-selves all pumped up for the Region Two Tournament this week. At Alta Tuesday, American Fork shot down the Hawks 71-54, then on Thursday, the Cavemen upsetted the Bingham Miners 74-63. The two wins put American Fork's region record at 6-8. This week, the Cavemen are participating in the league's tourney. The top four teams to finish in it will get to go to state. The fifth-place finisher must playoff with a team from another region in order to go the state tournament. Right after the Alta game, Caveman Coach Art Allred said, "I didn't expect to have a blowout win here." What he hoped for and got was a good performance by his team. "We came out shooting early," he said. "I think we hit five or seven shots before we missed." American Fork never trailed once in the Tuesday yawner. Once a 20-foot 20-foot bucket by Shaun Peters put the Cavemen on the board, they roared out to an 8-2 lead. By the time the first fir-st quarter had ended, American Fork had outscored Alta 16-6.Peters had a fantastic night in outside shooting. He made most of his 16 points on shots from barely outside the perimeter. American Fork's other high pointman, Clint Bean, as usual, proved to be deadly inside the key, racking up an evening total of 16 points. Though teammate Jody Osborne did not have a hey day in scoring, he did come up with lots of steals which he converted into assists. Also, junior Robert Rasmussen kept leaping in for rebounds. Alta finally warmed up in the second quarter. But by then, American Fork had the game under firm control. A very aggressive Steve Neeleman led the vain Hawk comeback. The closest Alta could get to American Fork was 16-8, and that was at the beginning of the second quarter. When halftone ended, the Cavemen's 33-17 lead showed there could be no hope for the winless Hawks. The opening of the second half made that even more .clear., The Cavemen's third-quarter salvo opened with a layin by Rasmussen. American Fork then AF bags BY DEAN VON MEMMOTT The West Jordan Jaguars' roar got silenced Monday by the Cavemen's 61-51 win over them in a Region Two tournament game here Monday night. While the game ended West Jordan's season, it extended American Fork's. The Cavemen played in the Mountain View Bruins' den in Or em Tuesday, but the result of that dual was not available at press time. American Fork had a devil of a time trying to keep the Jaguars under control, especially during the first half, which saw West Jordan tie the game five times. The Stars looked like they were in control early, and cruised out to a 13-4 lead behind Paul Smith, Dennis Durrant and Heath Snow, but the Celts got back into it as Jeff Manning and Brandon Wilkin scored late in the half to cut it down to a 4 point deficit at 17-13. In the third quarter the Stars could manage only 4 points total, and the Celtics had tied it as James Jacob connected, and the score was 21-21. The fourth quarter was back and fourth with Chad Woods and Jeff Manning trading baskets until the Stars were holding a 1 point lead at 30-29. Occasionally, Osborne thrilled American Fork fans with layups he made on steals. ' American Fork put up such a stiff defence in the third period that Hawks had to go to the line in order to make most of their points. Because of crack foul shooting that quarter, Doug Boudreaux and Chris Saunders became the Hawks' leading scorers with 11 points each. Taking a 55-30 lead into the final period, the Cavemen finally cooled, and Alta got hot. The Hawks poured in 24 points, compared to 16 American Fork made. Alta's rally could not make the Cavemen's lead shrink below 17 points, because of shooting by American Fork reserves Cache Miller, Scott St Claire, Cooper Wimmer, and Brendon Scoresby. Because of the point spread, the entire American Fork bench got to play. With the Region Two Tournament scheduled, the Cavemen had to host Bingham Thursday. So they had only one day to prepare to take the Miners, who had thumped in early January. But despite the little amount of time, American Fork still managed to knock Bingham out of a fourth place tie with Hillcrest Allred stated the Cavemen used a match zone to ruin Bingham's famous motion game, and pointed out, "We matched them where their people were." American Fork had a tough time sabotaging the Miners' strategy, especially at the beginning. Getting an offensive rebound, Robert Iverson put Bingham on the board first, and American Fork had to play a frustrating game of catch-up until a jump shot by Clay Smith broke the tied score of four. From that point until the late third quarter, the Cavemen stayed narrowly ahead. But that was not much comfort to them when they had the pesky Miners to deal with. Iverson, for example, scored eight of his 12 points that period to keep Bingham within four points of American Fork. Fortunately for the Cavemen, they had two teammates who were on that night, Bean and Smith. Thanks Jaguars Rasmussen sank a hook shot on an offensive rebound. Once American Fork got ahead 2-0, they never fell behind during the entire game. However, that did not mean West Jordan never got an opportunity to swipe the lead. The Jaguars had lots of chances in the first half to get out in front. But everytime they would receive such an opportunity, they would either miss a shot or make a turnover. tur-nover. Their chances of pulling ahead ran out for them early in the second quarter. It opened with West Jordan's Jor-dan's Rod Peterson tying the game at 12 with a shot from underneath, and American Fork looked as When he made the foul shot it was history as only 4 seconds remained. For the Celtics, Manning ended with 18, Jacob 12, and Wilkin 4 for all 34 of their points. The Stars got 11 from Woods, .7 from Smith, 6 from Snow and 4 from Durrant. , Bullets 44 -Jazz 24 The first quarter was back and forth with Randy Hayes of the Bullets, and Scott Jacob of the Jazz leading the way as the Bullets clung to a 2 point lead. It was in the second quarter that . Mark Dubois, Justin Greening, and Jeff Devey combined for 16 points, and the Bullets pulled away to a 7 point halftime lead. In the second half the Jazz couldn't find the range with the exception of Jason Rudabough, and the Bullets pulled away as Hayes and Jeramy Dalton got hot. Going 8-11 from the line, Smith also posted a varsity career high of 20 points. With Bean and Smith really hot, American Fork extended its lead from 18-14 in the first quarter to 38-31 in the second. The point spread grew wider in the third quarter when Bingham Coach George Sluga got slapped with two technicals on which Bean scored three points. Right afterwards, the American Fork center put the lead at 44-33 on an assist by Osborne. When the Cavemen got that far ahead, they looked as though they 61-51 in Region 2 though they would soon be in trouble. Senior reserve David Carlson went to work on demolishing the Jaguars. Besides breaking the tied score of 12, he produced steals and assists that tripped West Jordan up. While Carlson put on his dandy little show, the Jaguars lost their last chance of pulling ahead. After Peterson evened the score at 14, two free throws by Rasmussen not only broke the tie, but helped send the Cavemen sliding on their way to a 10-point lead. Carlson helped provide the grease for that slide. By halftime, American Fork had a 30-21 lead. A corner shot by St. Claire put the Cavemen in front 48-47 just as the the third-period buzzer sounded. American Fork built up a 50-47 lead early in Quarter 4; however, two straight bucltets by BafTark erased it The game stayed a seesaw battle until an inside shot by Bean put American Fork ahead 56-55. quarter. His shot made the Cavemen appear as though they were on their way to blowing West Jordan out. The blowout was slow in coming, though. Caveman Coach Art Allred said the major reason American Fork had a hard time scoring in the third quarter was that West Jordan had changed defensive strategy. "When you have played a team three times, they're bound to do different things to you," he remarked. With American Fork having a tough time trying to make points, the Jaguars had little trouble getting within six. However, they couldn't get beyond that mark, Jonathan Peterson with 6. The Sonics got 13 from Hanks, 8 from Nixon and 4 from Troy Park. Spurs 43 - Nets 16 The Spurs Troy Draper ended up with 14 points in the first half on their way to a 25-4 lead and the Spurs cruised home with the win. Draper ended with a bundle of rebounds as well, and looked strong with his outside shooting to top it off. Once the Cavemen finally warmed war-med up, their lead vacilated between bet-ween 15 and eight points through the half. Still, their defense remained strong, as was demonstrated by thrilling steals by Jody Osborne and Carlson. Here Tuesday, American Fork shot down the Alta Hawks 67-33, then bussed up to Bingham Thursday, where the Cavewomen caved in the Miners 75-43. Of Tuesday's game, Cavewoxnan Coach Ann Johnson said, "Alta was really hyped up for us. Tbey Jumped out to a M leadand we couldn't put the ball through the hoop. "We made adjustments in our offense and defense, and we turned the game around." Holding Alta to Just eight points that period, American Fork pulled ahead and did not find Itself behind again during the game. v Outscoring the Hawks 15 in the second quarter, the Cavewomen turned the game into a blowout "We pressed them, and our press was quite effective," Johnson noted. With 33 points, Stephanie Ttane led the demolition of the Hawks. Taking a distant second on the Cavewoman pointmaker list was senior Teresa Walker, who bad a score of 10, the highest she has had since her transfer to American Fork last autumn. Johnson said all her girls got to play in the Alta game. The entire American Fork bench also saw action in the Bingham game. Of Thursday's game, the coach said, "We led all the way." In doing so, American Fork posted a 19-8 lead in the first quarter, and the game went downhill for the Miners. The Cavewomen had two big guns in the blowout The one gun was Trane with a score of 22. The other one was Jennifer Hadfield, who had 21 points. "In the last while, Jenny (Hadfield) had been in a slump, but she played one of her best games Thursday," Johnson said. ' "A lot of fouls were called, and it was a good, aggressive game," she stated. "It was an important game. Winning it gives us a chance for taking third in region." Today's game at West Jordan will decide if the Cavewomen will take the No. 3 spot. American Fork's heavily favored in the game, because the squad had trounced the Jaguars here two weeks ago. . "In the last five games, we have , had more team unity," Johnson jsaid. Also, she pointed that "i$re iave been playing more to our potential." Today will see if American Fork will keep doing that free throw shooting (his foul pitches made him West Jordan's leading scorer with 14 points). Those times were not much comfort to West Jordan, though, when the loss here had cancelled the team's trip to state. SMITH DRUG CC. And Your Health 24 W. Main Am. The best approach to relieving allergic symptoms, however, is avoiding materials that cause allergic reactions. But every allergy sufferer is not aware of those . materials to which he or she may be allergic. And even if offending materials are known, they cannot always be avoided. When antihistamines do not provide appropriate relief , many physicians prescribe steroids -cortisone-like agents which often provide dramatic allergy relief. These medicines are also used in rheumatoid arthritis and a variety of other inflammatory conditions. For certain types of allergy of the passages to the lungs and of the nose, steroids in an aerosol i spray are frequently prescribed. I Such aerosols tend to have few of the side effects that may occur with steroids taken by mouth of injected into muscle. A popular aerosol containing beclomethasone has been found to provide marked improvement in 85 percent of individuals having allergic rhinitis (hayfever). . mWA |
