After getting hammered 63-45 by Spanish Fork's Dons at Spanish Fork Tuesday night, American Fork nipped Wasatch 35-33 35-33 in the Wasp's nest in Heber to break the defending 2-A champions' 27-game winning streak Thursday night Cavewoman Coach Ann Johnson said American Fork was done in during Tuesday's game by Spanish Fork's f astbreaks. She said, "We weren't prepared for their f astbreaks during the first five minutes of the game." As a result of their devastating offense, the Dons had a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Another thing that hurt American Fork very much in the opening period was foul trouble, according to Johnson. She said even though the Cavewomen got within 10 points one time in the game, they were unable to catch up with the Dons. Cavewoman Ann Rasmussen marked up 16 points to lead American Fork scoring. Diann Jensen and Sabrina Squires each made six points to become the Cavewomen's second highest scorers in the game. American Fork recovered from its stinging defeat in a couple of days strong enough to give Wasatch a good game Thursday night Not knowing that Wasatch had a 27-game winning streak on the line, the Cavewomen kept all but one of their opponents from scoring in double figures. The sole Wasp who was able to do that was Sherie North, who racked up 19 points to become the game's highest scorer. Also, she was 34 from the line. American Fork led almost the entire game. Rasmussen put it on the board first with a field goal early in the first quarter. North tied the game at two, but Jensen broke UNBELIEVABLE! ' 1 ,- Si feet'.,- , i 7 - - y- -1 - - M '.' Capitalizing on Wasp turnovers, the Cavemen stayed ahead until the middle of the second period when Wasatch pulled ahead 15-14 during a rally. A free throw by Cavewoman Jill Harley, however, tied the game, and Jensen sank an outside field goal, which put American Fork out in front indefinitely. Just because the Cavewomen were able to stay ahead for the rest of the game did not mean that Wasatch said die. The Wasps kept buzzing close behind them clear until the final buzzer. That could be seen when Wasp Annette Probst tied the score at 22 in the third quarter. That was the last time Wasatch caught up with American Fork in the game.- Things got really scary for American Fork when the Wasps came within one point in the final period. . What saved the Caveowomen's lead was defensive rebounds and Wasp turnovers. Harley, Monica Hendrix, Rasmussen and Jensen led American Fork scoring with eight points each.
