Embracing a local effort to bring humanitarian relief and smiles to the impoverished impov-erished in Honduras, particularly particu-larly children, members of the Bruins' International Thespian Association have joined hands with an Orem dentist and his wife who will be making their fourth medical mission to the country next month. Inspired by an initial trip made by the mission's three founding Utah County businessmen business-men in 2002, Dr. Robert Rogers and his wife Kristie Rogers have made the mercy missions mis-sions providing free dental services, equipment and dental instruction to Honduran dental students part of their life. On April 2(i, the Rogers and over 60 Utah medical professionals profes-sionals and volunteers will travel 1 Ionduras to help alleviate allevi-ate suffering and extend hope. An entire cargo container prepared by the group is filled with donated dental supplies, clothing, hygiene and newborn kits and toys and blankets for the children. PROGRAMAS Y MUSICA PARA LA FAMILIA Los Sabados De Las 12:00 A Las 5:00 p.m. FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS Collectively., the Rogers and the medical volunteers have assisted as-sisted 10,000 of the most needy Hondurans with dental work and donated some 60 used dental den-tal chairs and other equipment to dental students at a local medical school. "Now they go out to the most remote villages, places we could never go, and offer dental procedures to the people," peo-ple," Kristie Rogers said. "They are so excited to do something for their own people." Dr. Rogers said the medical medi-cal missions' dental supplies and hands-on training have changed countless lives. "Now the poorest dental school in Central America is also the best," he said. The Rogers' philanthropy is focused on a list of several hundred Honduran children, many of whom are orphaned and placed in youth prisons whose only offense is disobeying disobey-ing a parent or exhibiting a physical disability. On past humanitarian trips, some of the children have been freed from their predicament or adopted into loving families due to the Utah group's efforts. "Each child gets a blanket and each boy gets a soccer ball, each girl gets a doll," Kristie Kris-tie Rogers said. "For many of the kids, it's the greatest thing they've ever gotten. It gives them hope that someone out country, with all the freedoms we enjoy. We must respect everyone. Are we really any different from anyone else? We all have trials, and hardships. We are all living together, even if we don't act like it. We all have enormous potential placed inside in-side of us. Like Martin Luther King Jr. Said "We may all come from different ships, but we are in the same boat now." Is it truly hard to at least respect each other? To think of someone not as "that kid" but think of them as another human hu-man being, as a friend? If we get to know others we could have much in common with 24 HOURS A DAY to life is Jesus Christ there cares about them." That's where the Mountain View drama students come in they've been raising money through school penny wars to see who can raise the most funds and then using the money to purchase bolts of synthetic fleece material to construct nearly 2(H) blankets during their lunch hour and when they're not on stage during "Macbeth." They raised over $200 in just one week and also gathered donations from the audience following a brief PowerPoint of the medical mission at the conclusion of each weekend performance of "Macbeth." Groups of students sat chatting chat-ting and laughing in drama director Nathan Criman's stage room last week tying border knots on the blankets and stacking the finished quilts in a large pile near the door. Jessamyn Svensson, the thes-pian thes-pian club's senior president and Witch 1 in "Macbeth," can personally per-sonally relate to the Honduran children's plight. Growing up in poverty, her family depended on the kindness of others to get back on their feet. "I try to do as much as I can because I remember being so grateful," she said. Svensson said the club's efforts ef-forts to collect loose change and make blankets has struck a sensitive chord with members mem-bers unlike past fundraisers. MULTICULTURAL ESSAY them. Perhaps not in looks, but in ideas, and thoughts, and feelings. We should all follow the golden rule. Do unto others, oth-ers, as you would have them do unto you. Along with respect we need to be kinder to each other. We must speak kind words to each other. We shouldn't use bad language, just because some people think there better than others. "I think it's the kids," she said. "We've all just been very community-ish." For Criman, seeing his students stu-dents gain great strides on the stage and in being a human being has been immeasurably rewarding. "What's nice is that people will read something about these students and it's not that they won an award, or a game, or something negative," he said. "These young kids just grabbed onto this service." that ether. And when you say something kind to someone they don't have their feelings hurt. We should start now.
