The man called the Orem Depart merit of Public Safety late Sun day morning after he happened to spot his stolen truck parked at the Wal Mart parking lot in Orem. Officers investigated and watched the truck to see if the thief or thieves would be returning return-ing soon. At the same time, War Mart security checked their surveillance tapes and were finally able to tell the officers that the truck had been dropped of the at store at about 6 a.m. by two white male suspects. Since the truck was stolen out of Provo, a Provo officer responded to assist in the investigation. The officers checked the contents of the truck with the owner and :r 1 I 'fS.,J.VSF-' . According to Green, one thing you learn in the military is how to "finagle" (a word of uncertain origin, it means to obtain something by an involved means, usually by trickery). In involves, basically, "beating the system." sys-tem." And if any word describes the military, it's "system." We had in our unit a Chinese boy, fresh from China. He'd come to work in his uncle's restaurant in Los Angeles, and he was drafted, even though he knew no English. The army sent him to a training school, and he learned at least enough English to get by. He was made a cook, which was probably prob-ably a good choice, because he was a good cook. He had a Chinese girlfriend in Los Angeles who had been raised in the United States. She thought fairly highly of him, and he of her. He would write her in Chinese, but she wrote back, "No, you have to write me in English." At first, he couldn't even read her letters 61 W. I played it very straight, very private. Nobody else knew what was going on. Then I would write out for him in English what he wanted to say to her. But again she wrote back: "Hey, this isn't your handwriting. Tell that guy to stop writing." So then he would tediously copy what I had written and send that off. He and I developed devel-oped a very close relationship. He would bring me a steak sandwich or something at night when I was in the orderly room. Then we got a new commanding com-manding officer who insisted that the men know their general gener-al orders by heart before they could get passes to leave the base. This meant that we had to memorize a page of about 10 statements: "I will attend to my post in the military manner. . . . I will call the sergeant of the guard if something happens," etc. I taught the Chinese boy these orders, so he could say them without a lot of prompting. prompt-ing. He came into the orderly room one day for a pass. He was also a very shy person, so 1 just wrote out the pass and gave it to him. But as he started start-ed to leave, the commanding officer said to him, "Hey, just a minute, soldier. Let's hear your Thursday, January 25, 2007 general orders." The Chinese fellow, now all flustered, became tongue-tied, and 1 could see that the axe was about ready to drop. So in a moment of inspiration, I said to him, "Can you say them in Chinese?' "Yes, yes." When he finished, I said to him, "Take you pass and get out of here." The CO looked at me but didn't say anything. Another fellow was pretending pretend-ing he was going off the deep end, so he could get a Section 8, a medical discharge for mental men-tal illness. He would sit in his tent and hold a big, long hunting hunt-ing knife that he carried, and he wouldn't talk to anybody. If you talked to him, he wouldn't reply. Sometimes he'd get into a screaming fit. His tent mates were scared to death of him. One night they came running run-ning down, saying, "He's really flipped! He's slashing holes in the tent and cutting up our uniforms, uni-forms, and screaming!" As charge of quarters that night, I grabbed my carbine and a clip of ammunition. I put the loaded clip in my rifle and told the guy that if didn't behave himself, he was going to get the full clip. And he believed be-lieved me. The MPs came and took him away. I never saw him again. I memorized the name, rank and serial number of every one of the two hundred men in the company, so I didn't have to look up those details. That came in handy in the mornings when I had to list about 60 men who would be off on a detail. I Some veterans may wish, on their own, to tape or digital record their memories of military service. These will be transcribed and archived. For instructions on how to do this, e-mail Don Norton, at donnortonbyu.edu.
