How should that money be used? Why? lift " "Education. Always education. educa-tion. I'm a teacher ... We were just talking about this the other day. Doing more with public transportation, extending TRAX. That was my thing." I Carey and Dave Crockett "I think it should go to helping education provide more opportunities. op-portunities. They don't get funded that well." I Brady Knight "Probably more of the knowledge in schools. They need to spend more to provide better learning." learn-ing." Mic Lopp "The State Hospital. That's where I work. It's kind of the peon of state funds. They get what's leftover if the state decides they need it." "On our public schools I would think. (Because) our schools need it." I Merilee Furr I I s . t I Jason J. "I think that there is a combination combina-tion of ways. Returning some of it to taxpayers and providing provid-ing more funding for education. I think it should also be used for social welfare services to provide pro-vide health and dental care for those who can't afford it." Jason Rose "I think health care is one. Education. The roads here are a lot better. I just moved here from Louisiana and they're terrible there. For health and well-being, and education, not just in the schools, but in general gen-eral for the community." i Cameron Hay "I have lived in other states that did a much better job in education. I would start a gifted and talented program. Utah is big on Advanced Placement, but that's different (than gifted and talented programs). Everyone Every-one wants to push kids ahead into college. Other states take a better look at how kids learn in groups. I would like to see that." t Janet Nielson "They should pay teachers much better so that they have better qualified teachers. Right now so many good teachers are leaving for other careers because be-cause they don't earn enough teaching." I Carlos Pereira Mentors sought for Orem youth fishing club Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAhF The Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for a few volunteers to work with the Orem Youth Fishing Club and while it's helpful if prospective instructors know how to cast a line and hook a worm, it's not necessary. "One thing we'd like to find, even if they don't have a lot of fishing experience ... is people who are good with kids and like working with kids," said Mark Hadley, a Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman. spokes-man. Gaining popularity across the state in recent years, youth fishing clubs help children chil-dren ages 6-13 have a memorable memo-rable summer experience by teaching them to fish local streams and lakes. One of the first of its kind, the success of the Orem Youth Fishing Club, now in its sixth year, spawned interest in other city recreation clubs in the county including Salem, Saratoga Springs and two clubs in Spanish Fork. The cities recruit the members and half the volunteers while DWR furnishes the remainder of the volunteers. "2006 was our most successful suc-cessful year yet," said Drew Cushing, a community fisheries fisher-ies biologist with DWR. An estimated 2,500 kids and 230 volunteers in 17 clubs participated partici-pated in the six -week statewide state-wide program last year. "Many of volunteers were folks who had volunteered the year before," he said. "They saw the positive influence they had on these kids, and . they wanted to help in the program pro-gram again." Volunteers for the Orem Youth Fishing Club are needed to teach kids ages 6-13 about fishing and places where fish live for two hours a week during dur-ing April and May. Cushing will be in Orem Jan. 29 to provide a one-evening one-evening volunteer training session. To volunteer, or for more information, contact Cushing before Jan. 22 at (801) 5384774 or by e-mail at andrewcushingCoutah.gov He hopes to add six more volunteers to the Orem club's roster. "There's quite a few returning return-ing from last year, but we can only help as many kids as we have volunteers," Cushing said. The Orem Youth Fishing Club, which numbers about 70 child members, has an instructor instruc-tor for every five similar aged children. It meets for the first few weeks at Vivian Park in Provo Canyon and then fishes the Lindon Boat Harbor for the final weeks of the program. Club members get the chance to fish for trout at Vivian Park, and black bullheads, white bass and bluegill in Utah Lake. "What we've been finding over the last 10 years is that fewer and fewer young people are getting into the outdxrs and making it part of their life," Bradley said, in everything every-thing from hiking to camping to simply exploring. "Kids just aren't getting out-d(x)rs out-d(x)rs like they used to." Through programs like the Orem Youth Fishing Club, Bradley and others hope to introduce new generation of Utahns to the joys of the outdoors. out-doors. "Hopefully they'll be good stewards of our aquatic resources re-sources and take care of and protect them," he said.
