Show Thursday, November 9. 2006 0 R M TIMES NEWS AND IDEAS FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS les Miserables' Michael Rigert WXTH COUNTY STAff Perhaps its most ambition stage production ever, the performing arts at Mountain View High School will be presenting "Les Miserables" Mi-serables" the popular epic Broadway musical about love and strife during the French Restoration based on Victor Hugo's sweeping noveL Pooling the talents of over 96 students from the Bruins drama, choral, orchestra and dance departments. Mountain View will present the musical to the community Nov. 16-18, and Nov. 20. Nathan Criman, now in his 13th year as a drama teacher at Mountain View and the play's director, said faculty decided de-cided to tackle the Broadway behemoth last April after the school's enormously successful success-ful productions of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Evita" in recent years. Together with choral director direc-tor Rosemary Mathews, a former professional opera singer and choral director at the coDegiate level, school choreographer cho-reographer Shannon Vance, and bandorchestra conductor John Boman, Criman said they decided students had the ability abil-ity and savvy to pull off Les Me. "I thought it was a nice change of pace and we had the talent," Mathews said. "It's just been a tremendous pleasure plea-sure to work with this music" Set in 19th century Paris, "Les MiseraWes" is the tale of Jean Valjean, a convict who struggles to overcome his troubled past and find redemption redemp-tion despite the unwavering pursuit of his nemesis, police Inspector Javert Featuring an ensemble cast of families, heroes he-roes and miscreants, it's interspersed inter-spersed with powerful battle scenes upon the barricades and poignantly tender quiet moments of introspection and Lakeridge Junior High School has released its honor roll for the first term of the . 2006-2007 school years. Yet it's the musical's underlying un-derlying universal motifs of good versus evil, grace and redemption that Criman hopes will resonate not only with the cast and crew but with audiences audi-ences and families. "It's not the grand madame of the theater yet. but there's not doubt that Les MiseraWes will go down as one of the most important musical theaters the-aters in modern history," he said. "It embraces themes Hugo was trying to convey about redemption. The fact that love is so important I think is very telling." Casting began in August and an army of students, faculty and other volunteers rehearsed, practiced, constructed con-structed sets, sewed costumes and prepared every last detail during countless hours over past four months. Criman, who's directed 60 plays over the last two decades, said the biggest challenge to presenting a Broadway musical like "Les Miserables'' at the high school level is that most people have become familiar with it over the years. "It's trying to train students' voices to sound like it," he said. "We hope people will come because we think they'll be impressed by the voices they hear." Of the five very strong male vocal roles and four equally powerful female roles in "Les Miserables," Mathews said helping the young men develop de-velop more robust-sounding male stage vocals has been a challenge. ' While the girls' voices are typically more mature at the high school age, the young men's voices are still changing and deepening. "It's been as stretch to help our young men sound like men instead of the young men they are," she said.
