But downtown down-town also had Gene Rose's store at 1 18 1 h South Main St.. The Trick Shop. T he magic Cottam learned there has been useful since for his music, teaching and counseling. Magic isn't a trick you play fin people, he said in a May interview, it's something that happens between people. At 5X, the Saratoga Springs resident has 28 of 30 years needed to retire as a counselor in ihe Alpine School District. He said the state offers an early out bonus so it can hire cheaper personnel, per-sonnel, and he used part of that to purchase the last two years. A prevention specialist, he works with staff, faculty and students conducting crisis intervention, grief counseling and healthy -lifestyle training. Affectionately known as Magic Mike, he uses magic in his counseling and teaching. He received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in Alpine District in 2002 and the Utah State PTA Friend of Children Award in 2003. At the University of Phoenix, he has taught general education, counseling coun-seling and education courses. Cottam has commanded and conducted the 23rd Army Bund for several years, but has to leave that position at age bO, and is gnxiiTiing a new commander to take his place The band performs at several public concerts each year and is often seen at arts in the park series for north county communities commu-nities and at other events. Having played drums since fourth grade, about as long as he's been doing magic, Cottam put himself through college drumming six nights a week. He also played for the military, North County Newspapers OAlir MfftMD PUBmMlHG CO 59 W Main - American Fork, lT 84003 755-7659 FAX: 755-574 t lVl "i i VINlcirketplaCG Gang Ml YvtfSM MctftaM Abortion?
